Summary:
Today, tourism is rooted in a model of environmental and cultural degradation. 'AV Proyectos' presents seven alternatives that anticipate a hopeful shift towards community-based rural life, from C733's Jaguar Park in Mexico to Ryue Nishizawa's Shishi-Iwa House in Japan. As Gonzalo Pardo and Andrés Rubio point out in the article accompanying this section, its harmful impact must be confronted by defending local tradition and identity. David Chipperfield has shared his experience and also highlighted the growing difficulty of accessing housing, which has created a social crisis in London and is now surfacing in Galicia. The issue continues with the construction of the French Lycée Library in Madrid by Alberto Campo Baeza, and an introduction to the creative process of designers Muller Van Severen.

What was life like when a dozen people lived in a house not much bigger than a modern garage ? When children were born at home, people were maried at home and, later, died, were laid out, mourned, and buried at home ? This book is about how early American families lived in these old houses and the range of their lives in them - from the impossibly wealthy to the unimaginably poor, from Boston and New York to the small farms and plantations of the rural South, from trim New England villages to the raw frontier "West" of Missouri, Ohio, and Illinois. Here is a look to date of how families lived at the dawn of the republic and how their houses shaped their lives.

Summary:
Since 2008, for the first time in human history, more people reside in cities than in the countryside. As a result, suburban housing development is one of the most important construction tasks of our times. Architects and urban planners face the challenge of creating residential space and the associated infrastructure in the periphery or vicinity of modern cities. Whether large or small, such projects offer the opportunity of combining the advantages of urban and rural life. While many such housing developments were designed in isolation in the past, there are increasingly successful projects today that can serve as templates for future construction projects. The contents of this volume focus on the architectural aspects of row houses, residential parks, gated communities, and large housing developments.

This oublication is an enchanting collection of colour and black-and-white photographs taken in and around Cesare Fabbri’s native Emilia-Romagna and Sardinia between 2005–2015. Under Fabbri’s lens we encounter a silent world roused from its slumber, where objects are animated and personified. Fabbri nods to the photographic practice of Luigi Ghirri, bringing to mind the Italian master’s words: “the camera is a magical toy capable of bringing together the great and the small, illusion and reality, our adult awareness and the fairy-tale world of childhood.” Indeed, in 'The Flying Carpet', we encounter scenes that might derive from comics – a rural hut with painted questioning eyes, a plant uprooted and hovering mid-air, and an embroidered carpet lifting up in the breeze.

Summary:
A pioneer of "Water Urbanism" and the "Sponge City" model, Kongjian Yu is not only one of the most important living landscape architects, but also a keen observer of the present. His project proposals and his reflections on urban planning in China are a practical-conceptual reference with which to attempt to unravel the emerging questions of a planet threatened by environmental catastrophes, hydrogeological risks and a water crisis. Taking the foundational geometries of rural landscapes as a model, Kongjian Yu proposes very low technology water infrastructure works which, by activating an adaptive behavior, recompose intermediate landscapes between city and nature, concrete representations of the partnership between man and the element that, more than any other, generates and protects life and water.

Summary:
In light of the increasing disengagement between urban and rural areas, this book address the interdependency of cities with ecological and technological processes outside the purview of traditional urban planning. It compiles a huge amount of essays in regards to the most important topics that cities must address today, such as their connection with global data networks, ecological cycles of resources which supersede the traditional boundaries of urbanism. For this reason, it frames investigation of contemporary urbanism on nine imminent commons grouping the urban commons into resources and technologies lead us to the arcane classification of natural resources: air, water, fire, and earth, the four elements of ancient cosmologies; and five basic technological commons based on expanded human capacities: sensing, communicating, moving, making, and recycling.

Summary:
Mixing biography, autobiography, fiction, criticism, and conversations among friends, with ''Social Practices'' Chris Kraus continues the anthropological exploration of artistic lives and the art world begun in 2004 with Video Green: Los Angeles Art and the Triumph of Nothingness. Social Practices includes writings from and around the legendary ''Chance Event—Three Days in the Desert with Jean Baudrillard'' (1996), and ''Radical Localism,'' an exhibition of art and media from Puerto Nuevo's Mexicali Rose that Kraus co-organized with Marco Vera and Richard Birkett in 2012. Attuned to the odd and the anomalous, Kraus profiles Elias Fontes, an Imperial Valley hay merchant who has become an important collector of contemporary Mexican art, and chronicles the demise of a rural convenience store in northern Minnesota.

Summary:
By 2020, some 400 Chinese new towns will have been built, representing an unprecedented urban growth. While some of these massive developments are still empty today, others have been rather successful. The substantial effort on the part of the Chinese government is to absorb up to 250 million people, chiefly migrants from the rural parts of the country. Unlike in Europe and North America, where new towns grew in accordance to the local industries, these new Chinese cities are mostly built to the point of near completion before introducing people. The interdisciplinary publication, written by architects, planners and geographers, explores the new urbanistic phenomenon of "Chinese new towns". Especially commissioned photographs and maps illustrate many examples of these new settlements.

Summary:
