Summary:
Italian architect and designer Carlo Scarpa (1906–1978) left a huge mark not only on architecture but also on a wide range of design fields. His success in his field developed from those moments when he devoted himself to the study of the various techniques of construction. Whether in glassware or museum design, in the use of materials or those involved in essential building skills, what seems to have first seized his attention was the creative limitations implicit in them. This issue is a reprint of an extra edition of the magazine on Scarpa that first appeared in October 1985. Revived 40 years after its initial publication, it once again celebrates the complete picture of Scarpa’s designs.

Summary:
For decades, the call for equality and equal opportunity has been heard within the hierarchical world of architecture. The number of those actively working for change is growing. Their goal is to turn architecture into an ethically responsible and socially and ecologically sustainable practice. The publication proceeds from the question of how forms of social injustice are entwined on different spatial levels. As its enquiry unfolds, it becomes clear that the fight for gender equality in the built environment must now be linked to other forms of campaigning for social justice (anti-racism, anti-colonialism, the fight against transphobia and homophobia, etc.). As a political medium, architecture can help honour a new pledge of freedom based on a transformative idea of fairness. ARCH+ is Germany’s leading magazine for discourse in the fields of architecture and urbanism.

Summary:
One of the fundamental considerations in landscape architecture is whether to create something which appears to be natural, or to design something deliberately artificial. Always moving between nature and artifice the art of landscape architecture expresses itself in a sensitive awareness of time and place. If the design is not to become a mere ornament, then it must be supported by concepts and visions, daring to create something new from the existing surroundings. This collection of essays which have been published over the last decade in Topos – European Landscape Magazine, is a valuable contribution to the literature in the specialised field of landscape architecture. The authors include Paolo Bürgi who writes on dimensions of memory, Joachim W. Jacobs who investigates the Bauhaus and the theory of space, and Kathinka Schreiber who takes a critical look at landscape in film.

Summary:
This eighth issue of The Funambulist Magazine, dedicated to the police, can be read in continuity with Issue 04 (March-April 2016), which was focused on carceral environments. Its axiomatic editorial line is resolutely the same: just as there cannot be “better prisons,” there cannot be “better police,” at least not within the logics through which they are currently operating in a majority of the world’s societies. In this regard, the numerous murders of Native and Black bodies by the United States police, the violence of the Apartheid police in Jerusalem against Palestinians, the murderous operations of the Brazilian military police in the favelas, or the legalized abuse of power by the French and Turkish police during ongoing states of emergency; not as “police brutality” that would require reforms but, rather, as the very essence of policing itself, which calls for abolition.
