Summary:
In the summer of 1962, while still a university student of architecture, Andrea Branzi went to visit his brother Piergiorgio in Moscow, where he was working as a Rai correspondent. This was the world of the Cold War, but the "thaw" heralded by Nikita Khrushchev had somewhat loosened the grip of the Soviet regime. The young Branzi took the chance to wander around the city, exploring it from top to bottom. With a curiosity for everything, he was struck by the immense size of the capital, by its new neighbourhoods, by the signs of communism and its history, by the omnipresence of the military, but also by the relaxed outlook of the youth, the department stores, the Russians' carefree relationship with nature, the innocence of the children and the widespread love of chess.

Summary:
This outstanding collection of vivid political graphics from Argentina's Left Wing spans decades of political struggle--from woodcuts to desktop publishing. Flags are raised, workers are lionized, headlines blare from La Favilla, L'Agigatore, L'Amico del Popolo, La Questione Sociale, L'Allarme, Umanita Nova, Mundo Nuevo, El Burro, and Einstein, and a lion roars from the logo of La Protesta. The yellowed sheet music for a "Himno al 10 de Mayo" is preserved, as are a flier for Sacco and Vanzetti, a pileup of anarchy logos, many moving examples of homespun graffiti, and a collection of political cartoons, including one in which Labor pushes the pedals while Capital rides on the handlebars--with a champagne bucket. This chunky and cheeky volume is a must-have for anyone interested in graphic design, as well as left-wing politics.

Summary:
A truly radical response to conservative heritage tours and banal day trips, ''Rebel footprints'' brings to life the history of social movements in England’s capital. David Rosenberg transports readers from well-known landmarks to history-making hidden corners, while telling the story of protest and struggle in London from the early nineteenth to the mid-twentieth century. From the suffragettes to the socialists, from the chartists to the trade unionists, Rosenberg invites us to step into the footprints of a diverse cast of dedicated fighters for social justice. Rosenberg sets London’s radical campaigners against the backdrop of the city’s multi-faceted development. Self-directed walks pair with narratives that seamlessly blend history, politics, and geography, while specially commissioned maps and illustrations immerse the reader in the story of the city.

Summary:
Photography was invented between the publication of Adam Smith’s ''The Wealth of Nations'' and Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels’s ''The Communist Manifesto.'' Taking the intertwined development of capitalism and the camera as their starting point, the essays collected here investigate the relationship between capitalist accumulation and the photographic image, and ask whether photography might allow us to refuse capitalism’s violence—and if so, how? Drawn together in productive disagreement, the essays in this collection explore the relationship of photography to resource extraction and capital accumulation, from 1492 to the postcolonial; the camera’s potential to make visible critical understandings of capitalist production and society, especially economies of class and desire; and the ways the camera and the image can be used to build cultural and political counterpublics from which a democratic struggle against capitalism might emerge.

Summary:
Writing the City into Being is Bremner’s collection of essays, spanning more than a decade of work on Johannesburg. It is both an unflinching analysis of the characteristics of a city and a work of imagination – a bringing of the evasive city into being through writing. Johannesburg has become a touchstone in critical thinking on the development of the twenty-first-century city, attracting scholars from around the world who seek to understand how cities are changing in the face of urban migration in all its myriad forms and the inflow of foreign capital and interest. Writing the City into Being is an important book for those seeking to understand cities in a rapidly changing and fragmenting world. Lindsay Bremner is a guide to the city of Johannesburg, and one of its most incisive commentators.

Summary:
In "Havana beyond the Ruins," prominent architects, scholars, and writers based in and outside of Cuba analyze how Havana has been portrayed in literature, music, and the visual arts since Soviet subsidies of Cuba ceased, and the Cuban state has re-imagined Havana as a destination for international tourists and business ventures. Cuba's capital has experienced little construction since the revolution of 1959; many of its citizens live in poorly maintained colonial and modernist dwellings. It is this Havana--of crumbling houses, old cars, and a romantic aura of ruined hopes--that is marketed in picture books, memorabilia, and films. Bringing together assessments of the city's dwellings and urban development projects, "Havana beyond the Ruins" provides unique insights into issues of memory, citizenship, urban life, and the future of the revolution in Cuba.

Summary:
Tokyo 1955–1970: A New Avant-Garde explores the extraordinary convergence of artists and other creators in Japan’s capital city during the radically transformative postwar period. Examining works from a range of media--painting, sculpture, photography, drawing, printmaking, video and film, as well as graphic design, architecture, musical composition and dance--this is the first publication in English to focus in depth on the full scope of postwar art in Japan. Essays by scholars Hayashi Michio and Miryam Sas and curator Mika Yoshitake discuss critical concepts in art and culture at this time, including “graphism,” which manifested itself across various mediums; the development of new sculptural languages; and the “intermedia” tendency that engendered provocative cross-pollination among artistic genres. Masatoshi Nakajima provides an illustrated chronology and Yuri Mitsuda supplies artist biographies.

Summary:
The contributors to this volume trace cinema in Iceland from the 1979 establishment of the Icelandic Film Fund — before which the country’s film industry barely existed — through today. In a series of scene reviews, they show how rapidly the city has changed over the past thirty years. In thematic spotlight articles, they go on to explore such topics as the relationship between Iceland and its capital city; youth culture and night life; the relationship between film and the local music community; cinematic representations of Scandinavian crime; and filmmakers’ response to the 2008 banking crisis. Together, these varied contributions show how films shot in Reykjavík have been shaped both by Iceland’s remoteness from the rest of the world and by Icelandic filmmakers’ sense that the city remains forever on the brink of desolate and harsh wilderness.
