Summary:
Even in this age of varied home entertainment and fast-paced mass media, creative energy is being directed towards new spaces for live performance. Illustrated with photographs, computer renderings and architectural drawings, "Performing Architecture" explores fifty of contemporary performance spaces, as well as recently refurbished, restored and transformed buildings. A brief introduction traces the post-war development of theatre and concert hall design, and sets out the circumstances today that have led to such a rich provision for performance. Buildings featured range from Frank Gehry’s Disney Opera House in Los Angeles to the Unicorn Theatre for Children in London; and from the Tenerife Opera House by Santiago Calatrava to the Guangzhou Opera House, China, by Zaha Hadid.

A much-anticipated look at one of the most dramatic and exciting urban transformations in America. This book tells the story of the more than twenty-five-year history of architect Eric Moss’s transformation of a once blighted warehouse district on the edge of Los Angeles—the Hayden Tract in Culver City. With stunning and dramatic interventions, more than fifty of the old buildings now host such forward-looking, avant-garde high-tech and graphic design companies as Nike, Converse, AOL, Ogilvy International, Go Daddy, and Kodak. The buildings have names like Beehive, Stealth, Slash and Backslash, and Pterodactyl, and the district has become a favorite for firms involved in the film industry.

Summary:
Architects Frank Gehry (b. 1929) and Hans Scharoun (1893–1972) never met in person during Scharoun’s lifetime, yet two of their most famous buildings are intimately linked: Gehry’s Walt Disney Concert Hall, completed in Los Angeles in 2003, and Scharoun’s 1963 concert hall for the Berlin Philharmonic. Although constructed thousands of miles and decades apart from each other, the two buildings, located in what are now sister cities, share striking visual features, such as the combination of bold peaks with graceful sweeping curves. This catalog for a recent exhibition at the Stiftung Brandenburger Tor in Berlin takes the two concert halls as a jumping-off point to examine Scharoun’s influence on Gehry and uncover elements common to their work.

Summary:
Lee Friedlander is one of the few artists in any medium to have sustained a body of influential work over five decades. To make the photographs in Mannequin, he returned to the hand-held, 35-mm camera that he used in the earliest decades of his career. Over the past three years, Friedlander has roamed the sidewalks of New York City, Los Angeles and San Francisco, focusing on storefront windows and reflections that conjure marketplace notions of sex, fashion and consumerism, while recalling Atget’s surreal photographs of Parisian windows made 100 years earlier. Thoroughly straightforward, their unsettling and radical new compositions suggest photographs that have been torn up and pasted back together again in near-random ways.

Way Station extends the January 2015 exhibition by Shannon Harvey, Adam Michaels, and Levi Murphy at Grice Bench, Los Angeles. At once static and dynamic, the book presents a journey through a series of landscapes, juxtaposed with a steadily spinning furniture form—that of the primary exhibition component, a set of colorful benches featuring ergonomics designed to heighten and transform physical and mental awareness. The book provides a particularly associative experience for a reader seated on a Way Station bench, while maintaining interest far beyond this setting. Shannon Harvey is a designer and colorist. Adam Michaels is the cofounder of design studio Project Projects, and founder of Inventory Press. Levi Murphy is a designer and founder of Communal Objects.
