Summary:
The definitive monograph of Ari Marcopoulos, the renowned photographer whose explicit and startling visual intimacy bridges art and street photography. For nearly four decades, Ari Marcopoulos has broken conventions with his candid and raw style. His photographs documenting subcultures such as skateboarding, snowboarding, and hip-hop; his tendencies to photograph stark landscapes, portraits of artists, and celebrities; and his extremely quiet and intimate photos of his family and friends have all been hugely influential in helping to establish the visual rawness of youth culture, as well as the ephemeral aesthetic of contemporary photography. ''Ari Marcopoulos: Not yet'' is an unprecedented journey through the artist’s celebrated career, from skateboarding and snowboarding to rural landscapes and cityscapes. This volume includes both iconic and never-before-published photographs from the 1980s to now. Each chapter is edited by a different celebrated artist or family member—all close to Marcopoulos—and it is through these personal reflections on the artist’s work that this monograph takes on a deeper level of intimacy, drawing a more complete portrait of his oeuvre.

Summary:
In "The ends of research" Tom Özden-Schilling explores the afterlives of several research initiatives that emerged in the wake of the "War in the woods," a period of anti-logging blockades in Canada in the late twentieth century. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork among neighboring communities of White environmental scientists and First Nations mapmakers in northwest British Columbia, Özden-Schilling examines these researchers' lasting investments and the ways they struggle to continue their work long after the loss of government funding. He charts their use of planning documents, Indigenous territory maps, land use plots, reports, and other documents that help them not only to survive institutional restructuring but to hold on to the practices that they hope will enable future researchers to continue their work. He also shows how their lives and aspirations shape and are shaped by decades-long battles over resource extraction and Indigenous land claims. By focusing on researchers' experiences and personal attachments, Özden-Schilling illustrates the complex relationships between researchers and rural histories of conservation, environmental conflict, resource extraction, and the long-term legacies of scientific research.

Summary:
The book collects five vacation homes in Sweden designed by Stockholm-based architect Mikael Bergquist. Realized over more than two decades, they are all located in the Swedish countryside and rooted in the Nordic tradition of timber construction and the simplicity and economy of Sweden’s historic farm buildings. Bergquist’s great care for detail and choice of materials characterize these houses. They are united also by a close relationship to the surrounding nature, the experience of which is enhanced by the concepts of movement and the placement of passages between the outside and inside. The houses are documented with photographs as well as with plans and sections. In his supplementary essay, Bergquist writes about the special position of working as an architect on the periphery of Europe. He draws a picture of Swedish architecture that is marked by what he calls "fruitful misunderstandings" of current movements, and in which poverty of the rural population has been a major factor in the evolution of the design and construction of dwellings.

Summary:
The Zurich architect couple Annette Gigon and Mike Guyer are known for creating places for intense contemplation. After the Kirchner Museum at Davos, the extension of the Winterthur art museum, the renovation of the Winterthur collection Oskar Reinhart, their new museum project at Appenzell also exhibits a powerful, idiosyncratic sense of aesthetics. The Museum Liner, dedicated to the Appenzell painters Carl August and Carl Walter Liner, father and son, presents itself as a sculptural design: the very antithesis to descriptive postmodern architecture that threatens to draw attention away from the exhibits, this museum by Gigon and Guyer rests on the imperative of clear stereometrics and neutral spaces. In a rather subtle way, the architects succeeded in both integrating the new structure into the rural surroundings and the surroundings into the building. The fragile balance of mutual integration and partial participation may well serve as a metaphor for the difficult relationship between life and art. This book features the building, completed in 1998, in a photographic sequence by Gaston Wicky and textual essays by Hubertus Adam and Peter Dering.

Summary:
In ''Terra Infecta'', Andrea Bagnato tells an unfamiliar story about a well-known place. Since the early days of tourism, the cities and landscapes of Italy have been bywords for beauty and grandeur. But, at home and abroad, the same places have also been haunted by associations with disease and uncleanliness, often more to do with politics than conditions on the ground. In this gripping narrative study, Bagnato shows how the modern quest for sanitation shaped Italy’s urban and rural landscapes, propelling major transformations from the draining of the wetlands around Venice, to demolitions and replanning in Naples, to the expulsion of the inhabitants of ancient Matera. He argues that current north–south inequalities are founded on spurious medical narratives, and focuses on the real impact on the people caught in their ministrations. Ranging from Italian unification to the aftershocks of Covid-19, and drawing on architectural records, medical history, and the author’s own travels, ''Terra Infecta'' reveals the lived realities of grand schemes, traces of vanished communities, and forgotten histories of collective organisation and resistance.
