Summary:
For almost a decade, Ana Anahory and Felipa Almeida had an the interior design studio (AnahoryAlmeida studio) which led to a unique opportunity to discover and visit Portuguese family houses, with stories and beauty that deserved to be portrayed. Since then, time has passed and with the growth of tourism in our country, many of these houses ended up being transformed into hotels, vacation rentals, airbnbs and rural hotels, as it was too expensive to keep them just as family homes. This passion for these houses and their unrepeatable identity convinced them that this could be a project where the studio could work together again, photographing the properties that they still managed to find so that at least their visual memory didn't get lost. Thiis book wants to pay homage to a memory, a Portuguese savoir-faire and taste that is disappearing with the massification of design, objects and furniture. This book pretends to be a homage to Portuguese family houses, with stories and beauty that deserved to be portrayed.

Summary:
The Swedish painter Karin Mamma Andersson works with a highly idiosyncratic imagery, engendered by the mysteries of dreams, fairytales and everyday life. She paints with an indefatigable passion for storytelling, spreading the paint thickly with broad, sweeping gestures, or dryly and sparsely, across the canvas. Glimmering beauty and dark maelstroms of doom are sampled with elements from myths, films and dreams, the absurd and the realistic, in the same picture. Her early works feature children in vast landscapes, echoing her own childhood in northern Sweden. The figures are set, each separately, in forests, by lakes, in the countryside. This rural setting later gives way to the interiors of the art world – cluttered framers’ workshops, libraries and elegant salons with finely ornamented objects. More recently, these rooms have opened up towards new worlds, where dream and reality seem to be careening. Whatever motifs she paints, the atmosphere appears to be fairly constant: a form of serenity in between finding and forgetting. The titles underline the ambiguity, explaining nothing but running parallel with the paintings.

Summary:
In 1945, Edith Farnsworth asked the German architect Mies van der Rohe, already renowned for his avant-garde buildings, to design a weekend home for her outside of Chicago.Their personal and professional collaboration would produce the Farnsworth House, one of the most important works of architecture of all time, a blindingly original structure made up almost entirely of glass and steel. But the minimalist marvel, built in 1951, was plagued by cost overruns and a sudden chilling of the two friends' mutual affection. Though the building became world famous, Edith found it impossible to live in, because of its constant leaks, flooding, and complete lack of privacy. Alienated and aggrieved, she lent her name to a public campaign against Mies, cheered on by Frank Lloyd Wright. Mies, in turn, sued her for unpaid monies. The ensuing lengthy trial heard evidence of purported incompetence by an acclaimed architect, and allegations of psychological cruelty and emotional trauma. A commercial dispute litigated in a rural Illinois courthouse became a trial of modernist art and architecture itself.

Summary:
Guido Guidi's new book, "In Veneto," opens with a big eye framed in the blind of a shop window in Mestre, an eye which, by opening like a sort of warning, announces the origin of photography itself. This book contains a selection of hitherto unpublished photographs that Guidi took between 1984 and 1989, using a Deardorff 8X10. This was the first time he had used a large format camera for a whole project, which concentrated on an area in the central Veneto, an area known for having rapidly turned into a deeply uncertain, marginal landscape, one intimately hierarchy-free. The places he visited, in the provinces of Treviso, Vicenza, Padua and Venice, seem to be almost part of the same drawing, of the same place, bearing stark testimony to the process of change that has led to the transformation of a huge rural area, driving it into a form of fragmentation known as urban spread. The photographs in these much-loved places seem to re-evoke the three truths described by Robert Adams in "Beauty in Photography": geography, biography, and metaphor.

Summary:
Saint-Laurent boulevard, a major thoroughfare crossing the heart of Montreal from north to south, has witnessed more than three centuries of history. It has experienced spectacular transformations and reversals, incarnating in turn every facet of Montreal's character, from rural to urban and from the early days of industrialization to the latest in multimedia. A gateway for immigrants and a window on the world, a haven for marginal Montrealers of every stripe, the "Main" has long served as the melting pot for peoples and cultures in Quebec. Through the vast and far-reaching metamorphoses that have shaped the "Main" since its very beginning, we see Montreal and Quebec as a whole emerge into the modern age. For the busy sidewalks and chaotic intersections of the "Main" gave birth to many of the social movements that have marked our world, from women's liberation to unionization and the fight for human dignity. The "Main" has also attracted an impressive pool of artistic talent and been an testing ground for new forms of expression, including film, Yiddish theater, French song, and Quebec burlesque.

Summary:
Economic strengthening and the developments associated with it, such as population growth, rural flight, and the explosive growth of cities, pose enormous challenges for city planners in urban centers throughout the world. But clumsy "test-tube" urban plans like those developed for China in part by German planners have shown that different standards and rules apply in the non-European world than in Europe s organically developed urban structures. This manual analyzes contemporary urban phenomena in economic growth regions using the Ethiopian capital city of Addis Abeba as an example, and presents a catalogue of sustainable strategies for city planning practice in the Second and Third Worlds. In the process, it provides planners with generally applicable methods and tools that are usable at the design stage and equip them to develop and deploy dynamic planning and project management processes. To this end, it illuminates such topical subjects as the changing agrarian and industrial landscape, the activation of urban wastelands, and the increasing density of urban hubs. In addition, it uses real projects as examples to highlight avenues for practical implementation.

Summary:
From high-rise to desert, urban sprawl to empty canyons, the American landscape is incredibly various : how does one even begin to take stock of its endlessly proliferating cityscapes and vast horizons? Reading the American Landscape rises marvelously to the challenge. For this anthropological epic, 25 landscape architects, urban designers, visual artists, photographers and commentators on the American landscape were invited by The Netherlands Foundation for Visual Arts, Design and Architecture to undertake a journey through the United States, to study and record its history and development. Their study revolved around three themes or types of location : the city park as a social space in densely developed cities; landscapes on the periphery of expanding cities; and the development of large-scale rural areas as exercises in conservation. The writers for this project were each given a bibliography, from which they selected a single title as a starting point for their essays, on subjects ranging from parks and gardens to more general speculations on the unique features of the American landscape.
