Summary:
"City of Segregation" documents one hundred years of struggle against the enforced separation of racial groups through property markets, constructions of community, and the growth of neoliberalism. This movement history covers the decades of work to end legal support for segregation in 1948; the 1960s Civil Rights movement and CORE’s efforts to integrate LA’s white suburbs; and the 2006 victory preserving 10,000 downtown residential hotel units from gentrification enfolded within ongoing resistance to the criminalization and displacement of the homeless. Andrea Gibbons reveals the shape and nature of th e racist ideology that must be fought, in Los Angeles and across the United States, if we hope to found just cities.

Housing is increasingly unattainable in successful global cities, and Toronto is no exception - in part because of zoning that protects "stable" residential neighborhoods with high property values. ''House Divided'' is a citizen's guide for changing the way housing can work in big cities. Using Toronto as a case study, this anthology unpacks the affordability crisis and offers innovative ideas for creating housing for all ages and demographic groups. With charts, maps, data, and policy prescriptions, ''House Divided'' poses tough questions about the issue that will make or break the global city of the future.

If there is, indeed, nothing lovelier than a tree, Connecticut-based artist Bryan Nash Gill (1961-2013) showed us why. Creating prints from cross sections of trees, Gill revealed the sublime power locked inside their arboreal rings, patterns not only of great beauty but also a year-by-year record of the life and times of the fallen or damaged logs. The artist rescued the wood from the property surrounding his studio and neighboring land, extracted and prepared blocks of various species--including ash, maple, oak, spruce, and willow--and then printed them by carefully following and pressing the contours of the rings until the intricate designs transferred from tree to paper.

Summary:
"Reviving America's forgotten neighborhoods" brings a new angle to the urban redevelopment discussion by expanding the definition of successful revitalization beyond higher property values and income levels. In this important work, Elise Bright argues for a more holistic approach to measuring community development. In-depth case studies on a range of American cities--including Seattle, Milwaukee, the Twin Cities, Boston, and Pittsburgh--examine both successes and failures of inner city revitalization efforts. Drawing on field research and interviews with a variety of subject-city officials, planners, community activists and residents, Bright shows how factors such as communication between residents, shelter, and a feeling of safety can help save even the most devastated neighbourhoods.

This volume ventures into terrain where even the most sophisticated map fails to lead--through the mapmaker's bias. Denis Wood shows how maps are not impartial reference objects, but rather instruments of communication, persuasion, and power. Like paintings, they express a point of view. By connecting us to a reality that could not exist in the absence of maps--a world of(...)

This volume ventures into terrain where even the most sophisticated map fails to lead--through the mapmaker's bias. Denis Wood shows how maps are not impartial reference objects, but rather instruments of communication, persuasion, and power. Like paintings, they express a point of view. By connecting us to a reality that could not exist in the absence of maps--a world of property lines and voting rights, taxation districts and enterprise zones--they embody and project the interests of their creators. Sampling the scope of maps available today, illustrations include Peter Gould's AIDS map, Tom Van Sant's map of the earth, U.S. Geological Survey maps, and a child's drawing of the world.

Urban planning means far more than the design of land, property, and housing complexes. The visions of town planners and their clients —whether they are technical, artistic, political, or social — communicate, more or less clearly, the universal pursuit of happiness. However, the planners’ notions of "happiness" and those of future users are not always the same : often(...)

Summary:
Urban planning means far more than the design of land, property, and housing complexes. The visions of town planners and their clients —whether they are technical, artistic, political, or social — communicate, more or less clearly, the universal pursuit of happiness. However, the planners’ notions of "happiness" and those of future users are not always the same : often enough, the way in which residents use their city represents a complete contrast to the planner’s original ideas. Taking twelve European examples — urban planning projects seen from the viewpoint of planners and users — this book sheds some light on both sides of the "pursuit of happiness" — in urban planning projects seen from the viewpoint of planners and users.

Summary:
Despite the increasing numbers of people who now work from home, in the popular imagination the home is still understood as the sanctuary of privacy and intimacy. Living is conceptually and definitively separated from work. This book argues against such a separation, countering the prevailing ideology of domesticity with a series of architectural projects that illustrate alternative approaches. Less a monograph than a treatise, richly illustrated, the book combines historical research and design proposals to reenvision home as a cooperative structure in which it is possible to live and work and in which labor is socialized beyond the family—freeing inhabitants from the sense of property and the burden of domestic labor.

Summary:
As urban life is reimagined for greater sustainability, resilience, and adaptation, this publication invites readers to fully engage with the possibilities of how we can coexist with our urban habitats. Ursula Lang uses the yard as a faceted lens through which to examine the multiple and contradictory ways people live in urban environments, and how perceptions of those environments are shaped by contemporary environmental policies and projects. Visual ethnography and narrative illustrate how inhabitants of Minneapolis live with their yards as sites of social and environmental care while also negotiating difference. Throughout, Lang’s subjects engage in diverse and creative everyday practices of cultivation and property ownership, often quite distinct from the environmental policies and projects in place.
