Summary:
Today, with the advent of digital media technologies and the ability to conceptualize, express and produce complex forms using digital means, the question of the status of the architectural form is once again under consideration. Indeed, the computer liberated architecture from the tyranny of the right angle and enabled the design and production of non-standard buildings, based on irregular geometry. Yet, the questions concerning the method of form expression in contemporary architecture, and its meaning, remain very much open. Performalism takes up this discussion, defines it and presents changes in form conception in architecture, followed by their repercussions. The book is supported by a wealth of case studies from some of the top firms across the globe and contributed to by some of the top names in this field. With a unique and insightful emphasis on professional practice this is essential reading for all architects, aspiring and practicing. The book is supported by a wealth of case studies from some of the top firms across the globe and contributed to by some of the top names in this field.

Summary:
This book examines the key role of the digital image in architecture over four decades – in the process of digitizing knowledge in theory and practice – as well as its influence on architectural design and visualization: The transition from the analogue to the digital age is analyzed on the basis of 51 design visualizations, from hand drawings to photomontage to computer renderings, in order to illustrate how architecture has been impacted by digital methods and media. "Architecture transformed" is the result of a collaboration between the Deutsches Dokumentationszentrum für Kunstgeschichte – Bildarchiv Foto Marburg and the Chair of Architecture and Visualization at Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg as part of the German Research Foundation program entitled "The Digital Image."

Summary:
Over the last decade, 'parametricism' has been heralded as a new avant-garde in the industries of architecture, urban design, and industrial design, regarded by many as the next grand style in the history of architecture, heir to postmodernism and deconstruction. From buildings to cities, the built environment is increasingly addressed, designed and constructed using digital software based on parametric scripting platforms which claim to be able to process complex physical and social modelling alike. As more and more digital tools are developed into an apparently infinite repertoire of socio-technical functions, critical questions concerning these cultural and technological shifts are often eclipsed by the seductive aesthetic and the alluring futuristic imaginary that parametric design tools and their architectural products and discourses represent. The Politics of Parametricism addresses these issues, offering a collection of new essays written by leading international thinkers in the fields of digital design, architecture, theory and technology. Exploring the social, political, ethical and philosophical issues at stake in the history, practice and processes of parametric architecture and urbanism, each chapter provides different vantage points to interrogate the challenges and opportunities presented by this latest mode of technological production.

Summary:
Constant activity in digital and analogue spaces leaves behind an increasingly diffuse feeling of unease, irrespective of how commonplace that activity may be. Meantime however, the marketing of social relations, the dissolution of the private sphere, and the dominance of commercial actors are being perceived as a problem that demands an active interdisciplinary discourse. Media scientists and artists reflect here on that unease and present perspectives on and ways out of the excessive demands on users by way of the most recent research and artistic experiments. This book brings together essays and provides insight into the international group exhibition featuring works by Olia Lialina, Christoph Wachter & Mathias Jud, and Benjamin Grosser, among others.
