Summary:
Celebrated artist Keith Haring (1958–1990) has been embraced by popular culture for his signature bold graphic line drawings of figures and forms. Like other graffiti artists in the 1980s, Haring found an empty canvas in the advertising panels scattered throughout New York City’s subway system, where he communicated his socially conscious, often humorous messages on platforms and train cars. Over a five-year period, in an epic conquest of civic space, Haring produced a massive body of subway artwork that remains daunting in its scale and its impact on the public consciousness. Dedicated to the individuals who might encounter them and to the moments of their creation, Haring’s drawings now exist solely in the form of documentary photographs and legend. Because they were not meant to be permanent—only briefly inhabiting blacked-out advertising boards before being covered up by ads or torn down by authorities or admirers—what little remains of this project is uniquely fugitive. ''Keith Haring: 31 subway drawings'' reproduces archival materials relating to this magnificent project alongside essays by leading Haring experts.

Summary:
This new monograph from TC Cuadernos brings us closer to the recent work of Portuguese architect Nuno Brandão Costa, one of the most interesting contemporary voices in Portuguese architecture. This publication follows issue 90, which we released in 2009 featuring his early works, and now covers a period of intense creative activity and professional consolidation from 2010 to 2023. It is a meticulous journey through fifteen selected works that demonstrate the maturity reached by this architect over the last decade. The works span various typologies and scales, from single-family homes to large complexes. Projects such as the Campanhã Intermodal Terminal and the rehabilitation of the S. João de Deus neighborhood are studied with special attention, showing how Brandão Costa has expanded his field of action towards large-scale urban projects without losing the artisanal quality of the details that characterize his most intimate residential interventions. In all cases, his conceptual coherence, the harmonious relationship of his works with the landscape, and especially the masterful use of elementary geometries, refined volumes, and care for constructive details stand out.

Summary:
Unfolding across five parts, this issue frames the notion of pseudo along and beyond its ties with the "fake". While part one, "Simulation," blends the artificial with the familiar – whether in scale models or controlled biomes – the following part, "Promise," explores how futures are staged to organise the present. "Role" examines how identities become naturalized through space, claiming to be neutral, caring or traditional. "Scam" investigates architecture and urbanism as credible deceptive practices, where authenticity is fabricated and images pave the way for a collective participation in illusions. "Construction" examines how territorial interventions, such as camps, corridors, or quarries, produce political realities and stabilise power, turning narration into infrastructure. Ultimately, pseudo emerges as a condition that both shifts and suspends reality: not fully true, yet never entirely false.

Summary:
The New York based architect Lebbeus Woods – founder of the Research Institute for Experimental Architecture (RIEA) – concerns himself intensively with architectural theory and experimental architecture. His approach is free from the pressures of specific purpose built projects and rather tends to develop visionary projects which integrate research, philosophy, and art. The subject of his exhibition entitled “System Wien” which he developed in collaboration with Christoph a. Kumpusch is the urban structure of the city of Vienna which he plans to interfere in with specific architectural interventions. This publication - published for the exhibition of the same name in the MAK Vienna - documents the various works comprising the "System Wien" project. It develops an idea that the making of architectuere can be understood as the organization of energy. The project explores how energy relations in public and private city spaces might be represented tectonically in the form of drawings and installations; how existing energy elations in the city can be changed by the input tectonically in the form of drawings and installations; and hoe the future of the city need not depend for creative energy input on the development of building projects requiring large capital investments and institutional approval, but rather on the redistribution of energy at the human scale of the street and the room.

Summary:
"Museum Builders II" explores 27 contemporary museum commissions, which both demonstrate and generate aspects of identity, be they national, ethnic, regional, civic, or personal. The dialogue of "identity and difference" finds many and varied architectural expressions in the contemporary museum buildings highlighted, which are drawn from across the globe. The projects vary dramatically in scale, context, thematics and intent, but all raise questions of architectural representation. Many museum architects have turned to the natural landscape for inspiration, often for aesthetic or pragmatic reasons, but at times to invest their buildings with a specific identity. Similarly, rich archaeological and architectural caches have been plundered by designers in a quest to give identity to their built form. Several featured museum projects address the meeting of cultures, which were defining moments in history, and these encounters have left a tenacious legacy on the architecture and exhibitions of those museums. Most resonant here is the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum: a deeply poignant physical monument to one of the most horrifying and inhumane encounters in human history, and a most extreme example of the museum’s lasting role in the construction and depiction of identities.

Summary:
What if the people seized the means of climate production? In this groundbreaking book, Holly Jean Buck charts a possible course to a liveable future. Climate restoration will require not just innovative technologies to remove carbon from the atmosphere, but social and economic transformation. The steps we must take are enormous, and they must be taken soon. Looking at industrial-scale seaweed farms, the grinding of rocks to sequester carbon at the bottom of the sea, the restoration of wetlands, and reforestation, Buck examines possible methods for such transformations and meets the people developing them. Both critical and utopian, speculative and realistic, After Geoengineering presents a series of possible futures. Rejecting the idea that technological solutions are some kind of easy workaround, Holly Jean Buck outlines the kind of social transformation that will be necessary to repair our relationship to the earth if we are to continue living here.

Summary:
With a rigorous approach and self-imposed limitations to both scale and composition, Tomma Abts (b. 1967) has reinvigorated painterly abstraction and its relevance within contemporary art. Using a fixed canvas size and a vertical format, Abts deploys basic formal elements such as arcs, circles, planes, and stripes to create powerful works that are at once subtle and eccentric. This extraordinary book, designed in collaboration with the artist herself, is a substantial and deeply insightful treatment of her career to date and features sixty works made over the past decade. Essays not only contextualize Abts’s work within an art-historical framework of methods, process, and style, but also examine her paintings’ philosophical and psychological dimensions and their embodiment of a creative process that transcends the specifics of any particular work.

Summary:
This first monograph from Dutch architect and urban planner Kees Christiaanse and his firm, Kees Christiaanse Architects & Planners, or KCAP, follows the conception and realization of their most important designs. KCAP works at the interface between urban planning and architecture, combining the fields. Their broad range of projects includes large-scale urban and landscape planning, complex inner city regeneration and restructuring, and the same sorts of new building commissions that keep conventional architects in business. As Europe’s attention has shifted to the revival of urban areas, KCAP has done pioneering work at former dockland and industrial locations and on the waterfronts of major rivers, in projects where the firm often acts as supervisor, urban planner and architect at once. In the space of 15 years, KCAP has grown into an international office with an impressive built oeuvre that challenges the way architecture and urban planning are conceived. This survey and analysis of their work brings their ideas and experience to readers curious about urban revival both abroad and at home.

Summary:
Nature and communities in the global south is being overwhelmed at a shocking rate. In many places this is due to ventures such as large-scale open-pit mining, oil extraction in tropical areas, and the spread of monocultures. These and other such forms of natural resource appropriation are usually known as extractivisms. This introductory book on the one hand adopts an interdisciplinary and critical perspective, incorporating contributions from economics, politics, ecology, and more. On the other hand it is an exercise in the politics among humans and with the environment. Eduardo Gudnyas explores negative local impacts such as ecological and health degradation or violence, along with spillover effects that redefines democracy and justice. Significantly, presented for the first time in English is a comprehensive overview of the theoretical innovations currently being discussed in the South, such as the distinction between appropriation and production modes and a redefinition of surplus to include social and economic features or new understandings on conflict dynamics. Furthermore, Gudynas discusses the Latin American peculiarities of extractivisms produced both by conservative and new-left governments, making clear that it has very deep roots in culture and ideologies, and offers solutions for the future.
