The rural, remote, and wild territories we call "countryside", or the 98% of the earth's surface not occupied by cities, make up the front line where today's most powerful forces-climate and ecological devastation, migration, tech, demographic lurches-are playing out. Increasingly under a 'Cartesian' regime-gridded, mechanized, and optimized for maximal production-these sites are changing beyond recognition. In his latest publication, Rem Koolhaas explores the rapid and often hidden transformations underway across the Earth's vast non-urban areas. This book gathers travelogue essays exploring territories marked by global forces and experimentation at the edge of our consciousness: a test site near Fukushima, where the robots that will maintain Japan's infrastructure and agriculture are tested; a greenhouse city in the Netherlands that may be the origin for the cosmology of today's countryside; the rapidly thawing permafrost of Central Siberia, a region wrestling with the possibility of relocation; refugees populating dying villages in the German countryside and intersecting with climate change activists; habituated mountain gorillas confronting humans on 'their' territory in Uganda; the American Midwest, where industrial-scale farming operations are coming to grips with regenerative agriculture; and Chinese villages transformed into all-in-one factory, e-commerce stores, and fulfillment centers.

Summary:
" Unboxed : engagements in social space " is a collection of critical essays about and by artists who work across the borders of art, architecture and performance. This collection is loosely based upon the lecture series that Gallery 101 and the Carleton University School of Architecture co-hosted throughout the fall and winter of 2002-2003. The goal of that series (entitled "unboxed : dialogues on art & architecture") was, in part, to engage both architecture students and practicing visual artists with this vital yet under-explored arena of interstitial practices. The anthology, which is an attempt to further broaden the audience for this work and thereby increase the number of potential participants, includes transcriptions of lectures by international artists : Vito Acconci, Lucy Orta, Jan-Erik Andersson and Marko Peljhan, as well as commissioned essays by Canadian artists: Ana Rewakowicz, Eduardo Aquino, Marie-Paule Macdonald, Jean-François Prost, Luc Lévesque, Steve Topping, and Adrian Blackwell. Each text adds a mode of thinking about notions of space; directing us to consider the local and social connections between individuals and environments and, in their variety, they mirror the various ways we move in and around communities, rural and urban. Together, forming a challenging, engaging and accessible anthology that enlightens our way of seeing and our sense of being. It provides rare and exceptional information on interdisciplinary practices for students in art and architecture departments everywhere.

Summary:

Summary:
In the ten years since the first edition of "A Guide to Canadian Architectural Styles" was published, the heritage movement has gained strength, sensitizing many to the value of our architectural legacy. This new edition reflects an enriched understanding of architecture that focuses more on the visual and cultural setting of the built environment and less on individual works seen in isolation. Today, we cherish the buildings that characterize the original Main Street / rue Principale - the bank building, the shops, the old hotel, the post office, the city hall. There is more recognition for older inner-city neighbourhoods, with their row housing, churches, and community halls as well as for our often romantic attachment to vernacular rural architecture. This interest in more ordinary-looking architecture marks both the democratization of Canada's heritage movement and its coming of age, for the value of these more modest structures lies in their unique ability to sustain a sense of identity. This book provides an essential profile of the origins and development of the many architectural styles across Canada, from early settlement to the postmodern period, and discusses special forms such as religious, civic, domestic, commercial, and industrial design. While remaining true to the accessible format of the first edition, the second offers updated and considerably expanded text, as well as many more illustrations.

Summary:
"Landscape and History" explores a complex relationship over the past five centuries. The book is international and interdisciplinary in scope, drawing on material from social, economic and cultural history as well as from geography, archaeology, cultural geography, planning and landscape history. In recent years, as the author points out, there has been increasing interest in, and concern for, many aspects of landscape within British, European and wider contexts. This has included the study of the history, development and changes in our perception of landscape, as well as research into the links between past landscapes and political ideologies, economic and social structures, cartography, art and literature. There is also considerable concern at present with the need to evaluate and classify historic landscapes, and to develop policies for their conservation and management in relation to their scenic, heritage and recreational value. This is manifest not only in the designation of particularly valued areas with enhanced protection from planning developments, such as national parks and world heritage sites, but in the countryside more generally. Further, Ian D. Whyte argues, changes in European Union policies relating to agriculture, with a greater concern for the protection and sustainable management of rural landscapes, are likely to be of major importance in relation to the themes of continuity and change in the landscapes of Britain and Europe.

Summary:
Throughout the twentieth century, architects in Italy have attempted to define the role of architecture under diverse political systems, from the monarchy of the first seventy years since Italian unification, to the 21 years of Fascist control, to the post-Second World War parliamentary republic. At the same time, Italy holds some of the most prized architecture and art in the world, from antiquity to the baroque, packed into its dense historic city centres, which planners and politicians have negotiated as they struggled to cope with massive migration from the countryside to the city. Diane Ghirardo addresses these and other issues by considering modern architectural production in Italy from the late nineteenth century to the present day within a clear presentation of the larger historical, social and political contexts. From the post-unification efforts to identify a distinctly Italian architectural language to the transformation of the urban environment in Italian cities undergoing industrialization in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Diane Ghirardo challenges received interpretations of modern architecture, as well as focusing on the subject of illegal building and responses to current ecological challenges. With up-to-date examples, both from the work of widely published architects in the largest cities and from throughout the peninsula, including small towns and rural areas, Italy provides a comprehensive view of the country’s modern built environment.

Summary:
This book is an account of modern architecture in Turkey, placing architecture's history in the larger social, political and cultural context of Turkey's development in the twentieth century. It takes the reader from the end of World War I, when the new Turkish Republic was born out of the disintegration of the Ottoman Empire, to the country's democratization after the 1950s in the midst of the Cold War's competing ideological forces, and finally to the present, with Turkey continuing to be dramatically transformed through globalization, economic integration with the world market and transnational cultural influences, as well as with its renewed preoccupations with identity, including its Islamic and Ottoman heritage. Turkey explores a country on Europe's most eastern margin, and it is unique in tackling the issue of the modern and contemporary periods typically omitted in traditional surveys of modern architecture and Islamic art and architecture. The authors investigate how and why young Turkish architects adopted modernism early in the twentieth century and explore institutional and architect-designed buildings through the decades down to the present day, from government buildings, hotels and factories to apartment blocks and individual homes both urban and rural. They also focus on informal residential areas, and explain how some that have evolved from small settlements to colossal urban quarters exist at a slippery threshold between legality and illegality.

Summary:
"Wang Shu Amateur Architecture Studio" is the first major book on the recent work of architect Wang Shu, Pritzker Price winner in 2012, and his wife Lu Wenyu. Together they have run Amateur Architecture Studio, based in Hangzhou, China, for nearly 20 years. At a time when China’s explosive urbanization is making inroads into rural areas and leaving the marks of cheap concrete construction everywhere, Amateur Architecture Studio is keen to work against this tendency by reusing materials from the buildings that Chinese authorities are systematically tearing down. Amateur Architecture Studio’s working ways successfully represent socially conscious and sustainable new architecture. Wang Shu’s architecture reveals a thoughtful attitude toward both design and implementation, as well as the ability to react flexibly to the surroundings and history of a particular site. At heart, it comes down to preserving Chinese building customs and local awareness of material in a nation that is fast losing its building culture. The studio’s projects inhabit a fascinating field between allusions to traditional Chinese culture and large-scale modern architecture. This book is published on the occasion of the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art exhibition in 2017 of Wang Shu and Amateur Architecture Studio’s work. Featuring a wealth of images by architecture photographer Iwan Baan this is a detailed and reflective guide to Amateur Architecture Studio’s projects, philosophy and methodology
