From the time of its invention, photography has enabled artists not only to capture the world around them but also to create worlds of their own. "Utopia/Dystopia" investigates how artists from the late 19th century to the present have used photographic fragments or techniques to represent political, social, or cultural states of utopia or dystopia. Artists have employed a number of strategies to this end, such as cutting, fragmenting, and puncturing images as well as reassembling those culled from ready-made materials or giving a subject multiple exposures. The resulting photographs, photocollages, photomontages, and other creations question the validity of seamless pictorial images, and attempt to dismantle the notion of photography as an objective medium. This publication features approximately forty-five exemplary works by artists such as Herbert Bayer, John Heartfield, Hannah Hoch, Arata Isozaki, El Lissitzky, Carter Mull, Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, Vik Muniz, Man Ray, Okanoue Toshiko, and many others.

The "architectural imaginary" describes architecture in its broadest sense: images of cities drawn from collective experience and imagination. Hailing from 11 countries, each of the 14 artists who have contributed to Automatic Cities engage the psychological and sociopolitical aspects of architecture through their work, mapping the influence of the architectural imaginary on contemporary visual art. The book is organized into four thematic groupings. This publication is the first volume to address an overlooked art form that is neither artist's book nor ephemera, but is entirely its own unique entity: the artist's serial publication. Across such groundswell moments as the small press boom of the 1960s, the correspondence art movement of the early 1970s and the DIY zine culture of the 1980s and early 1990s, artists have seized on magazine and postcard formats as forms in themselves. These are not publications that print criticism, manifestos or reproductions of artworks; rather, they are themselves artworks, in large part they are produced by younger artists operating at the peripheries of mainstream art cultures, or by established artists looking for an alternative to the marketplace. Kiosk, Christoph Keller's famous art publications archive, has been exhibited at 27 institutions and biennials internationally since 2001, including the ICA (London), the Witte de With (Rotterdam), Artists' Space (NY), the Emily Carr Institute (Vancouver), MUDAM (Luxembourg) and biennials such as Manifesta 4, the 25th Graphic Biennial of Ljubljana and the Istanbul Biennial. To date, it contains more than 7,000 publications by approximately 500 independent art publishing projects, from magazines, fanzines, newspapers, journals, audio and video labels to institutional publishing, covering the entire bandwidth of publishing possibilities. On the occasion of the archive's final public presentation at the Kunstbibliothek, Berlin, this overview on independent art publishing activities today surveys the Kiosk project.
