Summary:
In 1891, James Beale, a wealthy, middle-class Unitarian solicitor from Birmingham, commissioned architect Philip Webb to design a holiday home in the Sussex countryside. The Beale family remained sole owners of the property until Helen Beale, James and Margaret Beale’s last surviving child, bequeathed the estate to the National Trust in 1972. Although Standen is recognised by architectural historians as a fine and complete example of Philip Webb’s Arts and Crafts architecture of the period and is widely celebrated for its Morris & Co. wallpapers and furnishings, little has been written about how the family experienced the house, garden and estate, and the extent to which this shaped Standen’s later life under the National Trust. This book fills the void, focusing on the Beales’ lived experience and how they collaborated with Philip Webb in the creation of Standen.

Summary:
An account by Frederic Eden - Gertrude Jekyll's brother-in-law and Sir Anthony Eden's great uncle - of a garden that he acquired, planted and cultivated around the turn of the 20th century. First published by "Country Life" in 1903, and reissued in France in 2002, this book is illustrated with woodcuts in the style of and period photographs, and tells the story of the creation of an English garden in the most improbable site imaginable on the Giudecca. The garden became, unsurprisingly, a resort of poets and aesthetes, and, having been given to the ex-queen of Aspasia and Yugoslavia, ended up as the property of the equally mad Austrian artist Hundertwasser. Now a "monumento nazionale", the Giardino Eden is still there, but closed to the public until funds for its restoration become available. Postface by Marie-Thérèse Weal.

Summary:
The vast majority of architects cut their teeth designing small-scale additions to private homes. Extensions can be added to roofs, gardens, and underneath buildings or can even be strapped on to the sides. Following a brief introduction, the book is divided into chapters featuring 40 projects that extend spaces up, down, to the rear, to the side, on the roof, internally, and outdoors. Each case study explains how the architects faced design challenges at the same time as meeting their clients' needs. Details covered include choice of materials, planning issues, time, and cost. The book also raises issues that clients ought to consider when commissioning an architect to design an extension, from developing a brief to the finished product. At the end of the book there is practical advice for anyone thinking about extending their own property.

Summary:
This volume edited on the occasion of the exhibition at MAXXI - Museo nazionale delle arti del XXI secolo in Rome from 25 October 2024 to 16 March 2025, curated by the world-renowned studio Diller Scofidio + Renfro. The exhibition and thus the catalogue intends to address the theme of movement not so much as a possibility for a building to move from one place to another as an internal property of architecture: buildings that change configuration, that have mobile elements, that swell or turn to accommodate more or fewer visitors. The ability to move or change like a transformer is also a recurring feature of the work of Diller and Scofidio (later DS+R), who often also used movement as a platform to connect art and architecture, combining the concepts of building and installation in an experimental (and very productive) way.

Summary:
Alexandra Kollontai was a prominent Russian revolutionary, a commissar of Social Welfare after the October revolution in 1917, and a long-term Soviet ambassador to Sweden. As a cofounder of the Zhenotdel, the "Women's Department" in the communist party, she introduced abortion rights, secularized marriage, and provided paid maternity leave. Kollontai considered "comradely love" to be an important political force, elemental in shaping social bonds beyond the limitations of property relations. 'Red Love' stems from a yearlong research by CuratorLab at Konstfack University together with Tensta konsthall, that led up to Dora García's exhibition Red Love and its related public programing. A number of artists and thinkers revisit Kollontai's ideas on the politics of love and their relation to current political, social, and feminist struggles. The publication also includes the biographical play Kollontai from 1977 by distinguished Swedish writer Agneta Pleijel.

Summary:
For much of the 20th century, critique played an important part in what was considered 'modern' architecture; the canon of modern architecture considered itself dedicated to both formal progress and social critique. But as the 1960s spurred a rereading of modern architecture from a perspective informed by Marxism and the decade’s new social movements, many concluded that a building practice could not be critical, owing to its interdependent relationship with power and business. With recent economic crises hitting the building and property sectors, and research playing an increasingly large role in architectural practice, we are witnessing a renewed interest in critique in contemporary architecture, especially from postcolonial and feminist positions. The essays contained in this book, authored by a variety of international architects and thinkers, address this revived moment of critique, arguing that, far from being dead, architectural critique is now indispensable.
