Summary:
Presenting illustrations gathered together for the first time, Le Corbusier: Furniture and Interiors is a comprehensive account of Le Corbusier’s extensive work in furniture and interior design. As a young architect, Swiss-born Charles-Edouard Jeanneret primarily worked in designed furnishings. After he moved to Paris in the early 1920s and adopted his now famous moniker, Le Corbusier developed a particular interest in équipement, a term he coined for the essential furnishings of a residence. He focused specifically on tables, cabinets, and eventually the chrome and leather chairs—designed in collaboration with Pierre Jeanneret and Charlotte Perriand—for which he became famous. These pieces exhibit Le Corbusier’s trademark metal detailing and elegant austerity. After World War II, Le Corbusier shifted to more functional designs for use in everyday life. These wooden pieces resemble packing crates, evoking a rustic design aesthetic rooted in functionality.

Summary:
This book is the first to tell the full and true story of Le Corbusier’s adventure in automobile design. Le Corbusier (with Pierre Jeanneret) entered an automobile design competition, submitting plans for "a minimalist vehicle for maximum functionality," the Voiture Minimum. Despite Le Corbusier’s energetic promotion of his design to several important automakers, the Voiture Minimum was never mass-produced. Architect Antonio Amado describes the project in detail, linking it to Le Corbusier’s architectural work, to Modernist utopian urban visions, and to the automobile design projects of other architects including Walter Gropius and Frank Lloyd Wright.

Summary:
Why does a visual artist, as Austrian photographer Georg Salner, make a photographic ‘excursion’ to Le Corbusier (and Pierre Jeanneret) in Chandigarh and to Oscar Niemeyer in Brasília (Niterói and Rio de Janeiro)? Of all grandmasters, Le Corbusier and Niemeyer are the only ones to have infused entire capitals with their ideas and endowed them with key buildings. They were all ‘ideal types’ of designers: innovative, influential and motivated by a huge commitment to a world civilization whose – at times utopian – approaches were not always able to flourish in every sense. Indeed, they remained lone figures with many outstanding comrades in arms and successors.

Summary:
Charlotte Perriand is one of the foremost figures in twentieth-century interior design. Together with her contemporaries and collaborators Pierre Jeanneret and Le Corbusier, she created many pieces of furniture we now consider classics. The first volume in a planned three-part series, this book looks at Perriand’s early life: her education, her work in photography, her early interest in pre-fab residential architecture, and her years spent working with Le Corbusier at his studio on the Rue de Sèvres in Paris. While most are familiar with Perriand’s game-changing design work, the book also documents her less widely known involvement with leftist groups and her desire for social change that drove her to create affordable and appealing furniture for the masses.
