Linoleum is a natural material with quite an eventful history of use since its invention in 1864 by the British entrepreneur Frederik Walton. Its first golden age was between 1900 and 1930, when numerous renowned designers - among them Josef Hoffmann or Bruno Paul - designed both collections and patterns. Even Peter Behrens - before he became the "artistic counselor" to AEG in Berlin in 1908 - tried his hand at designing linoleum patterns, to the point of developing a complete "corporate design" from stationary to catalogs to exhibition architecture for the Anker- Linoleum-Werke at Delmenhorst. Bauhaus architects such as Bruno Taut or Mies van der Rohe used linoleum in housing projects as an inexpensive and hardwearing but also decorative floor-covering. This book is the first to present this historically and ecologically equally important material in its various guises. Experts in the field contributed essays about the history of linoleum, its "discovery" by modernist designers and architects and its renaissance in contemporary design and architecture.

"Begin again, fail better: preliminary drawings in architecture" engages with one of the principal activities of the architect in the process of design: drawing by hand, and more specifically, the act of beginning those drawings. Architects try, fail, try again, fail better until they start to move in the direction that ultimately becomes a building . . . or not. This book brings together some 180 preliminary architecture drawings. More than fifty contemporary Swiss architecture firms each contributed two pieces that reveal something of their individual approach and understanding of architecture. This selection is enhanced by historical works from four significant British and Swiss archival collections dating back to the sixteenth century and up to the twentieth. Decades after gaining international recognition through the work of practitioners such as Arthur Erickson, Ron Thom, and Barry Downs, the West Coast Modern style remains widely celebrated and highly influential for residential architects in British Columbia and beyond, even as its expressions evolve and adapt to contemporary contexts. What are the contours of its legacy today—and has a new Cascadia regional style emerged? To explore these questions, Clinton Cuddington, co-principal of Measured Architecture, invited dozens of B.C.-based architects to share residential projects that best exemplified their design process. Their responses range from palatial mountain chalets to cabins sitting lightly in the forest to oceanfront retreats to sensitive urban renovations. Each house is presented through full-colour photos by professional photographers including Andrew Latreille and Ema Peter, and accompanied by short essays by curator and critic Michael Prokopow that draw on visits to each house and interviews with the architects to elucidate the many aesthetic and programmatic accomplishments on display. Since the beginning of the 20th century, artists and architects have often been in collaboration. This relationship was not necessarily without conflict – on the contrary, a productive tension and friction can often be found at the basis of their common endeavors. However, wherever art and architecture establish a common territory in the public arena, highly integrated schemes may result that are of particular appeal and quality. In recent years, the barriers between art and architecture have come down even further; while many artists are attracted to the spatial presence of architecture and its language and scale, contemporary architects also seek the inspiration of art and include artistic concepts into their designs. Great works of art/architecture have resulted from these cooperations and this book explores them in nine chapters from 1914 up to the present, highlighting the most striking examples of these interdisciplinary activities such as the LACMA scheme by Renzo Piano/Jeff Koons in Los Angeles, the Chichu Art Museum by Tadao Ando with its installation by Walter de Maria, the British Pavilion at the Venice Biennale by David Adjaye with artist Chris Ofili or the work by Keith Sonnier in the Munich Re Building by Baumschlager Eberle.
