Summary:
Across its 328 pages it holds a new history of the distributed realities of design. It depicts designed objects on their own terms to give an account of vision, material, and curiosity—representing a selection of the vast archive of more than 16 years of work from OK-RM through an orchestration of the lithographic process with a special set of colours. It is a site for committed study and experimentation, away from the structures of academe. It generates examples, prototypes, and models. It stages a dialogue rendered in a designerly writing through 26 alphabetised chapters (A–Z). It is unashamedly performative in its play with language, direction, and story. It captures the ongoing, open-ended conversation between the editors, who are makers and thinkers of design, including a long form discussion in the form of an interview with long term collaborator Jack Self and is introduced by poet Lila Matsumoto. In this social arena, the book is considered as everyday object and object of art. It examines designed objects and their meanings, which emerge from the interplay of form and context. What does it do? Why does it do it? How does it do it? It lays out new ideas about how designed objects relate to the cultures that they are borne from and the cultures they can create. It strives for transparency, but not at the cost of transcendence.

Summary:
The commons as a contested political idea has been continually articulated and reproduced in many disciplines and in relation to specific historical and geographical contexts. Since the 1960s, the concept of commons has started to play an increasingly important role in the field of urban studies. While commons are usually perceived as the material spaces of the city such as streets, parks, public spaces, etc., they are also perceived as the immaterial public realm- including subaltern and mainstream culture, knowledge, language, and modes of sociality. As the commoning process continuously involves the substance of urban spaces, be it physical or virtual, the concept of commons has actively contributed to reshaping spatial imaginaries such as urban islands, archipelagos, and thresholds. This issue of 'New Geographies' proposes the concept of commons as a mode of thinking that challenges assumptions in the design disciplines such as public and private spaces, local and regional geographies, and capital and state interventions. It expands the production of space as the commons into a planetary territory all the way from the intimate and subjective scale of the body to the connected material and immaterial spaces. In doing so, NG 12 aims to foreground the significance of political thinking in the process of space production, and invites to imagine alternative social relations and modes of urbanization.

Summary:
Jonathan Reid Sévigny was born and raised in Cowansville, in the Eastern Townships of Quebec, a culture so unique and full of rare and local treasures that become significant to those who grew up there but perhaps seem completely foreign and often tacky to outsiders. It isn’t the most glamorous town, nor does it have any particular sites or landmarks that one would go out of his / her way to visit. In The Sweetsburg Archives Sévigny is attempting to use his Quebeçois boyhood as an archetype for the relationship between the individual, the hometown, and the bewildering beauty that connects the two. As adults, we tend to romanticize our youth, we try and remember the best things about our coming of age, but we’re also scarred by certain events which we wish we could go back and change; fight back, kiss back. At a glance Sévigny’s depictions of Cowansville seem crisply utopian, a neat little playground of nice boys and girls. However, a closer look reveals their human forms are corrupt, splayed, eaten, and absorbed by animal fraternities, by swords of ritualistic death, by minute veils of the macrocosmic sky in all its unknown intricacies. The scene becomes otherworldly in the kid’s play, pushing us to remember that what is around and inside is both innocent and dirty, violent and soft, and constantly revised.
