Summary:
As the global economy has changed over the past decades, it has left an architectural legacy of abandoned factories, warehouses and docks in its wake. But these spaces need not remain empty; the history of post-industrial society is still being written. All over the world, abandoned industrial infrastructure is being creatively repurposed. RE–USA provides a toolkit for adaptive reuse grounded in practical examples. Cities and cases are selected to illustrate the power of innovative processes and projects based on private-public partnerships, bottom-up initiatives, community involvement and smart design despite difficult conditions, from declining demography to weak real estate values and scarce investment.

Summary:
Alice Aycock (b. 1946) emerged onto the New York art scene in the 1970s and is best known for her large-scale public sculptures that often combine an industrial appearance with references to weightlessness as well as to science and cosmology. Aycock also has embraced the practice of drawing throughout her enormously productive career. This book is the first exploration of her spectacular drawings, which include elements of mirage, fantasy, and science, and evoke both abstract thinking and bodily sensation. The works on paper featured in this volume highlight the major themes that have governed her artistic practice: the role of architecture as a founding point of reference; the importance of mechanics and structure; and references to nature. As author Jonathan Fineberg demonstrates, Aycock is an artist who thinks on paper.

Summary:
Vivian Manasc, one of the founders of Manasc Isaac Architects, has pioneered sustainable architecture in Canada. Her work in partnership with Indigenous communities has been her greatest inspiration, and it has transformed the very nature of her practice. Through the profound lessons of the seven Grandfather Teachings, Vivian came to understand that the process of planning and designing a building should be a circle, with the beginning and end of the story linked together. The stories Vivian tells in this book are also framed by these teachings of Courage, Love, Wisdom, Respect, Truth, Humility and Honesty, with each teaching illuminating an aspect of how working with Dene, Cree, Saulteaux, Métis, Inuit and Inuvialuit communities has influenced her design practice.
