Summary:
What begins as a meditation on "the museum" becomes, in this book, a far-reaching critical examination of how art history and museums have guided and controlled not only the way we look at art but the ways in which we understand modernity itself. Originally delivered as the 2001 Slade Lectures in the Fine Arts at Oxford University, the book makes its deeply complex argument remarkably accessible and powerfully clear. Concentrating on a period from the beginning of the nineteenth century to the beginning of the twentieth, Donald Preziosi presents case studies of major institutions that, he argues, have defined--and are still defining--the possible limits of museological and art historical theory and practice. These include Sir John Soane's Museum in London, preserved in its 1837 state; the Crystal Palace Exhibition of 1851; and four museums founded by Europeans in Egypt in the late nineteenth century, which divided up that country's history into "ethnically marked" aesthetic hierarchies and genealogies that accorded with Europe's construction of itself as the present of the world's past, and the "brain of the earth's body." Through this epistemological and institutional archaeology, Preziosi unearths the outlines of the more radical Enlightenment project that academic art history, professional museology, and art criticism have rendered marginal or invisible. Finally, he sketches a new theory about art, artifice, and visual signification in the cracks and around the margins of the "secular theologisms" of the globalized imperial capital called modernity.

Summary:
Malick Sidibé has gained an international reputation for his documentation of an important aspect of the history of Mali. His photographs uniquely convey the atmosphere and vitality of the capital, Bamako, in a period of tremendous euphoric cultural change. Soon after Sidibé set up his own studio in 1962 he was highly sought after to photograph all the happening events and ceremonies in Mali, including football matches, weddings, Christmas Eve celebrations and the surprise parties thrown by groups of youths belonging to clubs. The clubs were named after their idols and the styles of western music (Los Cubanos, Les Caïds, Las Vegas, etc.) which had just started being sold in Bamako. Malian independence brought not only a whiff of liberty and insouciance, communist friendship with brother countries, but also dreams of western society. Sidibé sometimes photographed five reports in one night before returning to the lab to develop the negatives. He would then display on the studio walls carefully numbered index prints which were glued on administrative folders. These are the «chemises» reproduced in this book. In the following days, the party people came to look at the folders and select the photos that they wanted to buy. The folders reproduced in this book constitute a significant catalogue of Sidibé's work. Progressively, in the mid-seventies, youths met less frequently at clubs and went more often to night clubs which were not Malick's haunts. He therefore shifted his activity to studio portraits and camera repairs.

Summary:
This latest volume in the Society of Architectural Historians' Buildings of the United States series analyzes the architecture, landscape, and planning patterns of the capital of Massachusetts and forty surrounding cities and towns that fan out from Boston Harbor. The term "metropolitan" here emphasizes both the range of the project and the importance of this area in introducing regional planning to the United States. Extensively illustrated with photographs and maps, and supplemented with a glossary and bibliography, the book assesses built form from initial colonial settlement in the 1630s through twenty-first-century additions to the Boston area landscape. The authors selected both exemplary and representative buildings and sites for inclusion. Here are structures of international reputation and buildings that characterize the vernacular housing patterns of the region. Because of the exceptional importance of the Boston area to the history of landscape architecture and city planning, those issues have been addressed in both the narrative introduction and the 640 entries. In contrast to other existing architectural guides, which do not move beyond central Boston and Cambridge, The Buildings of Massachusetts: Metro Boston canvasses the twelve sections of central Boston, its eight annexed neighborhoods, five sections of Cambridge (the district's second largest municipality), and forty surrounding communities have been examined. This volume has been designed to complement a second guidebook in the Buildings of the United States series that will focus on the buildings of Massachusetts from Cape Cod to the Berkshires.

Summary:
Hollywood's famous sign, constructed of massive white block letters set into a steep hillside, is an emblem of the movie capital it looms over and an international symbol of glamour and star power. To so many who see its image, the sign represents the earthly home of that otherwise ethereal world of fame, stardom, and celebrity -the goal of American and worldwide aspiration to be in the limelight, to be, like the Hollywood sign itself, instantly recognizable. How an advertisement erected in 1923, touting the real estate development Hollywoodland, took on a life of its own is a story worthy of the entertainment world that is its focus. Leo Braudy traces the remarkable history of this distinctly American landmark, which has been saved over the years by a disparate group of fans and supporters, among them Alice Cooper and Hugh Hefner, who spearheaded its reconstruction in the 1970s. He also uses the sign's history to offer an intriguing look at the rise of the movie business from its earliest, silent days through the development of the studio system that helped define modern Hollywood. Mixing social history, urban studies, literature, and film, along with forays into such topics as the lure of Hollywood for utopian communities and the development of domestic architecture in Los Angeles, The Hollywood Sign is a fascinating account of how a temporary structure has become a permanent icon of American culture.
