While visiting Rome, world-renowned photographer Gregory Crewdson was invited to tour the legendary film studio Cinecittà, where directors such as Federico Fellini and Roberto Rossellini shot their iconic works. He found the elaborate film sets fallen into ruin and, captivated by their beauty, chose them as the subject of his next body of work. Although his earlier series were characterized by large production crews, custom-built soundstages, and hired actors, Crewdson returned to Rome with only a small team to create the haunting black-and-white portraits of deteriorating buildings and deserted streets that are flawlessly reproduced in this book.

Summary:
Forty years after Michel Foucault's groundbreaking 1975 study, Discipline and Punish, the available tools of scrutiny, supervision, and discipline are far more capable and insidious than Foucault dreamed, and yet less effective than Bentham hoped. Public squares, container ports, terrorist holding cells, and social networks all bristle with cameras, sensors, and trackers. But, crucially, they are also rife with resistance and prime opportunities for revolution. The Inspection House is a tour through several of these sites — from Guantánamo Bay to the Occupy Oakland camp and the authors' own mobile devices — providing a stark, vivid portrait of our contemporary surveillance state and its opponents.

This is an eye-opening tour through the exuberant works of two pioneering postwar architects. From 1946 to 1973, Whitney Rowland Smith and his partner, Wayne Williams, designed more than 800 projects, from residential, commercial, and public buildings to housing tracts, multi-use complexes, and parks and master plans for cities. Working in the wake of the first generation of avant-garde architects in Southern California and riding the postwar building boom, their firm, Smith and Williams, developed a pragmatic modernism that, through remarkable planning and design, integrated landscapes with buildings and decisively shaped the modern vocabulary of architecture in Los Angeles.

Summary:
''Room 606'' preserves the definitive masterwork of the Danish architect and designer Arne Jacobsen, in microcosm. Room 606 is the only surviving interior of the SAS House; the combined luxury hotel and satellite air terminal that Jacobsen designed for the Scandinavian Airlines System (SAS) and completed in 1960. The SAS House was the most complete commission of Jacobsen’s career, in which he exercised the full range of his talents as a designer of furniture, lamps, textiles, gardens, tableware and graphics. As the fragment that encapsulates the basic ideas of the whole building, Room 606 provides a lens for reconstructing Jacobsen’s vanished masterwork in words and images. Richly illustrated with nearly 500 photographs and drawings, this book guides the reader on a virtual tour through the Royal Hotel and SAS Air Terminal as they stood in 1960. Along the way, the author reveals the connections between the SAS House and Jacobsen’s earlier buildings and objects. As a result, the tour that begins in Room 606 provides a general introduction to Jacobsen’s career. Based on his ongoing study of modern Nordic architecture, Michael Sheridan has developed ideas established in his 2003 cult classic- also titled ''Room 606'' and long out of print- to arrive at a fresh perspective on Arne Jacobsen’s life’s work. Using new text and images, Sheridan reveals the essence of Jacobsen’s creative practice, in which he employed technology to heighten the presence of nature.
