Collaborating with residents, Burkina Faso architect Francis Kéré places social and historical needs at the heart of his design thinking More than almost any other contemporary architect, Burkina Faso–born Diébédo Francis Kéré (born 1965) stands for the social and cultural possibilities of architecture: the innovative aspect of his work lies in his reliance on local residents. Kéré first made a name for himself in 2008 with his designs for Christoph Schlingensief’s Opera Village Africa, and since then he has received numerous international awards (including the 2004 Aga Khan Award for Architecture), primarily for his building projects in his native Burkina Faso.

A wooden Japanese house slated for demolition will instead be moved to Venice for exhibition. Yet the house put on display will not appear in its original form. Dismantled for shipping, it will be reassembled on-site in new configurations created by architects and artisans from Japan, who will add new or local materials and other elements in the process. In other words, the exhibition of the house will be a fantastical installation that combines old and new in a composite of creative efforts by multiple designers and craftsmen. This book, edited by architect Kozo Kadowaki, explores the project in detail.

Summary:
Architecture builds upon history. Even the avant-gardist creed to “make it new” still assumes a past. It is impossible to imagine novelty without an awareness of what existed before. This is even more true for the reuse and appropriation of existing structures, where designers take a stance relative to the past. In their transformation projects the office of(...)

Architecture builds upon history. Even the avant-gardist creed to “make it new” still assumes a past. It is impossible to imagine novelty without an awareness of what existed before. This is even more true for the reuse and appropriation of existing structures, where designers take a stance relative to the past. In their transformation projects the office of diederendirrix architects retell stories of buildings and sites – by paraphrasing part of the story, by recasting central actors, by making architecture speak in other words. In so doing, they make it anew.

Summary:
This architect from Rome is one of the younger generation of Italian architects who possesses a wide knowledge of the architectural debate and is firmly dedicated to a qualitative and innovative resurrection of architecture in Italy. He is known, among other reasons, for his analyses of the cultural situation and the profession of the contemporary architect in the internationally renowned architectural magazine "Domus", as well as for his activities as deputy editor-in-chief of this journal from 1992 to 1996. In this book, Nicola Di Battista analyses the discipline of architecture and the architect's profession, developing principles of a new orientation from a beneficial distance and with a clear overview.

From chairs made of steel tubes to bare-basic rooms, she created an entirely new look. American Suzanne E. Vanderbilt was one of the first women to design cars for General Motors. Designer of cities Jane Jacobs caused controversy in the 1960s with her campaign against a New York expressway that revolutionized the way we understand urban life. And designer Ritu Kumar, known as “the grand woman of Indian fashion,” is celebrated for bringing the beautiful tradition of embroidery to modern clothes. The other designers profiled in this collection are landscape architect Cornelia Hahn Oberlander, roboticist Cynthia Breazeal, costume designer Eiko Ishioka, interior designer Aissa Dione, fashion designer Vera Wang, and architect Zaha Hadid.

Summary:
Contemporary discomfort with romanticism and Utopia arguably obstructs the shift of Lefebvre’s thinking from being objects of theoretical interest into positions of actually influencing practices. Attempting to understand and act upon architecture and the city with Lefebvre but without Utopia and romanticism risks muting the impact of his ideas. Although Utopia may seem to have no place in the present, Lefebvre reveals this as little more than a self-serving affirmation that ‘there is no alternative’ to social and political detachment. Demanding the impossible may end in failure but as Lefebvre shows us, doing so is the first step towards other possibilities. To think with Lefebvre is to think about Utopia, doing so makes contact with what is most enduring about his project for the city and its inhabitants, and with what is most radical about it as well. "Lefebvre for architects" offers a concise account of the relevance of Henri Lefebvre’s writing for the theory and practice of architecture, planning and urban design. This book is accessible for students and practitioners who wish to fully engage with the design possibilities offered by Lefebvre’s philosophy.

Summary:
The projects by ten Korean architects highlighted in this exhibition catalogue satisfied briefs that mostly called for modest and human buildings, in opposition to the large housing sectors currently being built in Seoul and many other Asian cities. Particular attentiveness to the surroundings is seen in a number of the projects, especially when inserted into a mixed urban context of old and new. The high quality of traditional workmanship is readily apparent, along with close attention to detail and specific cultural qualities. In addition to an essay by Inha Jung on correlative architecture and new urban realities, the book includes detailed project data, images and drawings.

Summary:
Iran has one of the oldest town cultures in the world, going back more than 4000 years. Between the Islamic conquest in the seventh century and Westernisation in the second half of the nineteenth century, the cities and towns in today’s Islamic Republic of Iran underwent repeated changes. Persian building culture influenced architects and artists as far as Central Asia in the north and India in the east. Unlike any other country in the region, Iran shows a unique urban and architectonic development whose defining characteristics merged with other cultures over time, representing an important contribution to world architecture. In this architectural guide, author and architect Thomas Meyer-Wieser embarks on a journey into history, showcasing nearly 300 buildings and other projects in Tehran, Isfahan and Shiraz. His focus is on the Iranian-Islamic architectural identity, which has held its own since the rise of the Safavids in 1501.
