Summary:
The improvement of public lighting is an effective and economical way to enhance the attractiveness of urban downtown areas. Many cities in Germany and Europe have already recognized this fact and used master plans to create entirely new systems of urban lighting. They have been motivated to do so by the desire to compete with other cities and to upgrade and enhance their city centers. Although this trend is widespread and enduring, a typology of urban lighting has not been available until now. As a concrete and practical guide, this book establishes first standards for the field. Drawing on the author’s experience, it addresses the technical and planning aspects of the task and provides important information on feasibility and possible financing models. Organized systematically and with a wealth of color illustrations, detail drawings, and implementation plans, it is an indispensable guide to successfully interacting with other planners, government departments, and investors.

Summary:
The designs of urban river landscapes must fulfill a broad range of requirements: flood control, open space design, and ecology are as a rule the three dominant themes, and they must often be reconciled within a very restricted space. This book is the product of a multi-year study that subjected more than fifty Western European projects to a comparative analysis. The result is a systematic catalog of effective strategies and innovative design elements. First, designers and planners are given an overview of the broad and varied spectrum of design possibilities. The book’s process-oriented approach is especially helpful where the focus is on long-term, sustainable measures. The publication consists of two linked volumes that enable the reader to consult the systematic catalog and the case study section side by side.

Summary:
The 1840s were a period of rapid growth and social conflict in Montreal. The city''s public life was marked by a series of labour conflicts and bloody sectarian riots; at the same time, the ways that elites wielded power and ordinary people engaged in the political process were changing, particularly in public space. In Taking to the Streets Dan Horner examines how the urban environment became a vital and contentious political site during the tumultuous period from the end of the 1837-38 rebellions to the burning of Parliament in 1849. Employing a close reading of newspaper and judicial archives, he looks at a broad range of collective crowd experiences, including riots, labour demonstrations, religious processions, and parades. By examining how crowd events were used both to assert claims of political authority and to challenge their legitimacy, Horner charts the development of a contentious democratic political culture in British North America. Taking to the Streets is an important contribution to the political and urban history of pre-Confederation Canada and a timely reminder of how Montrealers from all walks of life have always used the streets to build community and make their voices heard.

Summary:
Rob Krier counts among the protagonists of the post-modernist circle of architects of the second half of the 20th century, and is one of the leading thinkers in the field of the theory and practice of town planning. He has always objected strongly to the dominance of rationalism and functionalism in architecture. Of great significance in his urban planning is the relationship between emptyand built upon urban space. Krier is also one of the most exceptional architectural draftsmen; his colourful, precise and detailed drawings are more like architectural vedutas and caprices. Presented here in all its manifold aspects are over four decades of Rob Krier's work, including a complete list of works.

Summary:
Since 2008, for the first time in human history, more people reside in cities than in the countryside. As a result, suburban housing development is one of the most important construction tasks of our times. Architects and urban planners face the challenge of creating residential space and the associated infrastructure in the periphery or vicinity of modern cities. Whether large or small, such projects offer the opportunity of combining the advantages of urban and rural life. While many such housing developments were designed in isolation in the past, there are increasingly successful projects today that can serve as templates for future construction projects. The contents of this volume focus on the architectural aspects of row houses, residential parks, gated communities, and large housing developments.
