Summary:
The question of ownership is the critical fault line of our times, and during the pandemic this issue has only become more divisive. In the face of crisis, the authors warn that mere redistribution within current forms of ownership is not enough; our goal must be to go beyond the limits of the current system, dominated by private enclosure and unequal ownership. Only by reimagining how our economy is owned and by whom can we address the crises of our time—from the fallout of the pandemic to ecological collapse—at their roots. The authors argue that the systemic change we need hinges on a new era of democratic ownership: a reinvention of the firm as a vehicle for collective endeavour and meeting social needs; against the oligarchy of the platform giants, a digital commons that uses our data for collective good, not private profit; in place of environmental devastation, a new agenda of decommodification—of both nature and needs—with a Green New Deal and collective stewardship of the planet’s natural wealth. Together, these proposals offer a road map to owning the future and building a better world.

Summary:
The product of an international collective of artists, architects and writers who create collaborative projects and publications, this third edition of Surface Tension's Supplement series documents three years of artistic research, site-specific work and location-based practices in Curitiba, Brazil--providing an in-depth exploration of the city's economically marginal favela dwellers, who venture throughout the public spaces of Curitiba in search of recyclable materials. Documentation and texts elaborate on the cultural and political issues that come to light through various uses of public space. Originally developed as a collaborative installation between international and local artists--including Ken Ehrlich, Brandon LaBelle, Octávio Camargo and Guilherme Soares--exhibited at Curitiba's Ybakatu Gallery, this publication raises pertinent questions about the consequences of cross-cultural and site-specific collaboration and proffers an experimental approach toward political inquiry and intermedia practice.

They've been called cheeky pranksters but the immersive environments created by the artistic collective lampoon consumer culture with a razor-sharp wit. BGL's exhibitions have included the staging of an ornamental tree factory, a bonfire and a flea market; and their urban carousel made from security fences and lampposts joyously greeted visitors at MASS MoCA's 2012 exhibition, Oh Canada. Through their ingeniously-crafted installations, BGL repositions cultural ephemera and unique sculptures in new and thought-provoking ways, often requiring viewer engagement and always to general delight. This in-depth examination of BGL's practice accompanies the world premiere of their new work, Canadassimo, created especially for 2015 Venice Biennial, where the collective is representing Canada.
