Summary:
There is a revolution currently underway in the world of wine. Established and new vintners are discovering the dual marketing advantage of coupling exquisite, name-brand designer architecture with the winery tour. Internationally renowned architects, such as Frank Gehry, Herzog & de Meuron, and Santiago Calatrava, have all designed wineries that focus on the experience of wine production for the visitor while providing brand recognition in the form of architecture. Celebrating the new alignment that the wine industry is making with design, "Wine by design" highlights the most exciting new designs for wineries and spaces of wine from throughout the world including Australia, Chile, USA, Canada and the established vineyards of Europe. It also emphasises the way design is making headway into wine retail and wine bars, as well as the trend for conspicuously displayed spaces for the storage and consumption of wine.

Its immersive habitats range from the windswept ice of Greenland's musk ox to the quiet bamboo forests of Kenya's bongo antelope. "Fabricating wilderness", a PST ART project, is the first book to explore the art, science and history of NHM's remarkable habitat groups. Drawing upon new research, this behind-the-scenes tour is illustrated by both contemporary photographs and archival images. It takes readers through the origin of dioramas and the turbulent early history of NHM's halls, while also introducing the gifted artists who painted picturesque background murals and meticulously recreated every natural detail. Even at 100 years old, the story of NHM's dioramas is not over.

Summary:
Existing at the margins of life, lichens are the result of symbiotic relationships between fungi and photosynthesizing partners in the form of algae or cyanobacteria. Comprising more than twenty thousand species, lichens are pioneers in diverse ecosystems, colonizing virtually any surface and growing at almost any altitude. Found in rainforests, polar regions, deserts, and your backyard, lichens embody a paradox of toughness and sensitivity, surviving trips to space yet endangered by even the slightest environmental changes from industrial pollution here on Earth. Lichens grow everywhere, but only on their own terms: no one has ever fully assembled a lichen in the lab from its component parts. "The lives of lichens" explores all facets of these peculiar organisms, blending stunning macrophotography and graphics with in-depth coverage of profiled species to provide an unforgettable tour of the marvelous world of lichens.

Summary:
"John Soane and the Wooden Bridges of Switzerland" provides an insight into the technology, construction and design of timber bridges in the 18th century. Among the sketches and models is a series of three wooden models attributed to the Swiss architects Hans Ulrich and Johannes Grubenmann. Bridge-building had always fascinated Soane. As a student, he had even won a gold medal for his design of a wooden bridge. During his long professional career, Soane often planned bridges and was consulted about their construction. On his way home from the "grand tour" of Italy, he took a detour through Switzerland to see some bridges built by the Grubenmann brothers. The bridges at Wettingen, Reichenau and Schaffhausen left a lasting impression on the young architect. Years later, in his lectures to the Royal Academy, he would praise their "sublime simplicity".

Summary:
"Multi-National city" follows three architectural itineraries through three cities and their histories. Like so many, these cities are caught within the feedback loops of globalization : Silicon Valley in northern California; New York's internal suburbias; and Gurgaon, a burgeoning corporate city outside of New Delhi. Each exhibits a distinct character, while together, they also form important nodes in what the authors describe as a single Multi-National city (MNC) stretching across the globe. The itineraries traced through them take the reader on a tour of the architectural monuments of corporate globalization-corporate campuses, high-rise towers, "public" atriums, call centers, and gated communities-that tracks their shared logic, their internal discrepancies, and their undeniable strangeness. Each itinerary concludes with an unannounced stop at an architectural project that applies the lessons of the Multi-National city to itself.
