Summary:
Home to 20 million people and still growing, Greater Cairo mirrors the global phenomenon of unplanned urban growth. Approximately 60 percent of the population of Africa’s biggest city lives in so-called informal housing, typically five-to-ten-story concrete-and-brick-infill structures built without permits in the desert or on former agricultural land. 'Housing Cairo: The Informal Response' illuminates the architecture of informality and its mechanisms of production through a series of theoretical essays and architectural design proposals. Central to the project is a re-examination of the concept of “informality” itself and its often negative connotations.

Summary:
Yoshio Futagawas photographic homage to two single-family residences in São Paulo designed by architect Paulo Mendes da Rocha allows an intimate look at domestic life shaped by the contrast between exposed concrete surfaces and lush natural surroundings. Designed and built in the early 1970s, both houses are archetypal examples of the so-called Brazilian Brutalism style for which the architect is famous. At the time, they became a laboratory for the architects political beliefs as he developed a language and spatiality of his own. Besides their remarkable aesthetic expression, the houses feature unique solutions related to the organisation of the programme.

With a portfolio of hundreds of housing projects, Vandkunsten Architects is renowned for designing quality spaces for affordable living. This volume is part of a series about projects by the Danish firm that are representative of its work throughout the years. Ten ongoing or recent projects are selected that feature social, minimal, exclusive, and quite ordinary settings in which people live, ranging from container residences and social housing to luxury living in Oslo Fjord. Modest budgets call for efficient construction techniques, yet the office pursues maximum architectural freedom in its designs, whether using prefab timber-frame box modules, solid wood, or concrete elements.

Summary:
What good is design? In a world facing social unrest, political tribalism, and impending ecological doom, Tomás Maldonado poses philosophical inquiries into the role design plays during a moment of crisis and analyzes what “design” might mean as an ever-enlarging compass beyond stylization of specific objects. He discusses how design is both influenced by and central to ecological crisis. Written as a kind of obituary to the Modern movement’s wave of failed “concrete utopias,” Maldonado combines philosophy, sociology, radical countercultural thought, and the ecological sciences into a polemic that recenters design in the human environment.

Summary:
Echoing the pastoral and elegiac modes of the Romantic poets, whose reverence for nature never prevented them from addressing it with all ideas and sensibilities their times allowed, Sina Queyrass stunning new collection explores the infrastructures and means of modern mobility. Addressing the human project not so much as something imposed on nature but as an increasingly disturbing activity within it, Expressway exposes the paradox of modern movement and connection: we build more and more roads and highways (concrete and fibre optic), but rather than feeling more connected to the natural, to each other the more disenfranchised and anxious we seem to become.

Summary:
The cities of Paris and Chandigarh are the two poles in whose field of tension Le Corbusier's unique creative powers developed. Paris stands for the experimental white modernism of the twenties, a phase that begins immediately after his early works and peaks in the Villa Savoye. Chandigarh in India is the location of the brutalist monumental buildings that accompanied Le Corbusier almost throughout his late period until his death. In between these two great phases - in this book as well - comes his town planning work applied to concrete projects and also his preoccupation with geometrical design principles in the Modulor.

Summary:
Dag Nordbrenden’s publication ''Arituba Spa Center'' is a photographic study of an unfinished and broken-down Brazilian apartment complex in massive concrete architecture. The plan was to build holiday apartments, but the project came to grief in 2008 as a result of the financial crisis and money-laundering scandals in which Norwegian investors and developers were also involved. In that sense the pictures reflect economic decline as well as architectural collapse. The intended holiday idyll has become an image of global economic hubris. Nordbrenden has gone into this material wasteland with an awareness of photography’s long love affair with the aesthetic of decay.

The concrete skeletons of polykatoikia – multi-story apartment buildings – are emblematic of the development of modern Greece throughout the second half of the twentieth century. The book deals with the politics of urban space by treating the unfinished buildings as study objects and tracing their individual histories. Through the words of current owners and by means of photographs, archival documents and found artefacts, a different chronicle of the development of modern Arthens is taking shape.
