Summary:
Luminous wallpaper, curtains that produce electricity, or self-cleaning windowpanes, more than ever before innovations in surface technologies are influencing and will continue to revolutionize the use of materials in architecture, interior design, and design. The new smart surfaces expand considerably design possibilities for architects and designers. Their use leads to new typologies and concepts that can also do justice to changes in expectations for buildings and design.Smart Surfaces brings these design fields into the creative focus of planners and designers, and emphasizes concrete possibilities for applications. Around 75 % of residential buildings in Germany are made of masonry – a trend likely mirrored across Europe, such as in the southern regions and the UK. This enduring preference reflects growing confidence in solid construction and provides the impetus for dedicating this issue of Detail to the topic. There are many reasons to opt for brick, including local building traditions. In Limerick, Ireland, Níall McLaughlin Architects designed a brick exhibition building celebrating rugby, the national sport. In Berlin, nearby brick cemetery structures inspired the facade colour of a foundation centre. Using single-coloured exposed concrete and two brick types, AFF Architekten made a bold red statement in the cityscape.

Summary:
The direct and indirect influence of politics is making it increasingly clear that exhibitions have an inherent political dimension. This “Exhibition Politics” issue reveals the often conflicting interests that collide in the exhibition space and analyzes how institutions in particular react to an increasingly intense situation with symbolic and real political actions. Its dual focus examines, on the one hand, the visual regimes and mechanisms of inclusion and exclusion that manifest themselves within the exhibition space and, on the other hand, the concrete debates about culture cuts and the question of how aspects of the Israel-Palestine conflict can be addressed in the exhibition space in the wake of October 7th.

Summary:
''Seventeen Playgrounds'' is a research project by Denisa Kollarová and Anna van Lingen on the work of the Dutch architect Aldo van Eyck (1918–1999), who designed hundreds of playgrounds in Amsterdam between the 1950s and 1970s. These playgrounds, characterised by simple metal structures and concrete elements, enabled children to develop autonomy and creativity through play. The research began as a mapping of the few surviving sites still present in Amsterdam’s cityscape, developed within the Graphic Design course at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie, and was first published by Lecturis (NL) in 2015. This second edition is co-published with the Faculty of Fine Arts at the Technical University of Brno (CZ).

This is a book that students of architecture will want to keep in the studio and in their backpacks. It is also a book they may want to keep out of view of their professors, for it expresses in clear and simple language things that tend to be murky and abstruse in the classroom. These 101 concise lessons in design, drawing, the creative process, and presentation--from the basics of "How to Draw a Line" to the complexities of color theory--provide a much-needed primer in architectural literacy, making concrete what too often is left nebulous or open-ended in the architecture curriculum.

Map is not a magazine (it only has two pages) and is not a book (it is issued twice a year). Map presents itself as a folded poster (A1) where information is immediate, dense and objective in one side, and architectural and subjective on the other. Map is a guide to potential actions in the built environment, a folded encyclopedia of the possible, a topography of ideas, or a poster on the wall.

Summary:
Countering the prevailing view, which reduces Lefebvre’s theory of space to a projection of his philosophical positions, Stanek argues that Lefebvre’s work grew out of his concrete, empirical engagement with everyday practices of dwelling in postwar France and his exchanges with architects and planners. Stanek focuses on the interaction between architecture, urbanism, sociology, and philosophy that occurred in France in the 1960s and 1970s, which was marked by a shift in the processes of urbanization at all scales, from the neighborhood to the global level. Lefebvre’s thinking was central to this encounter, which informed both his theory of space and the concept of urbanization becoming global.

Summary:
In The Raw and the Cooked, Peter Bialobrzeski (born 1961) sets forth the most complete account of his vision of the Asian megacity. From the simplest shack to the tallest highrise, from vernacular buildings made from scavenged materials to corporate buildings made from steel, concrete and glass, Bialobrzeski records the demented proliferation as Asia’s cities reach higher into the sky and farther across the land. This publication collects a series of tableaux from 14 countries around the world, in which economic transformations are shown to have brought dizzying disparities between wealth and poverty. It depicts these cities with a seductive glow that renders them eerie and unreal as expressions of progress.
