Summary:
Most books about cinema, whether popular or academic, concentrate on what we might call the ‘inside’ of the film: from star performances to narrative structures. The relatively few books about the ‘outside’ of films speak mainly of such aspects of production and reception as the organization of the film industry and the sociology of audiences: the Hollywood studio system, for example, or fan clubs. The Remembered Film is unique in addressing a previously overlooked aspect of cinema: the isolated fragments of films, iconic images or scenes, that fleetingly cross our perceptions and thoughts in the course of everyday life. Victor Burgin examines a kaleidescope of film fragments drawn from a variety of media, the internet, memory and fantasy. Among these are sequences of such brevity they might almost be stills. Such ‘sequence-images’, as Burgin calls them, are neither strictly ‘image’ nor ‘image sequence’ and have not been considered before by either film or photography theory. He also considers some typical individual experiences ‘sampled’ from mainstream cinema. He reflects on such disparate occurrences as the association in memory of fragments from otherwise unrelated films, of the relation of a recollected film image to an architectural setting, or of a feeling ‘marked’ by an image remembered from a film. The Remembered Film provides a radical new way of thinking about film outside conventional cinema, and in relation to our everyday lives. It will appeal to a wide audience interested in film and media.

Florence : a map of perceptions

Summary:
Many years have passed since architect Andrea Ponsi settled in Florence, and still he feels he does not fully comprehend this mysterious city. The way Florence eludes understanding, however, can be an opportunity — to keep seeking, to keep exploring. Ponsi’s Florence is endlessly suggestive. His tour of the city is one of continually shifting light and perspective, of stunning symmetry and an even more compelling asymmetry, of sudden transitions from bustling streets to the most perfect silence. While Ponsi does consider such celebrated sites as the Piazza Santa Croce, the Ponte Vecchio, and the Duomo, the book is a decidedly personal view of Florence. The author notes the city’s recurring geometry — the square courtyards, triangular spires, octagonal plaques and pillars — and marvels at a room almost too big to be called a room. He views the city from various terraces and likens the expanse of rising and falling rooftops to ocean waves. Here is Florence as labyrinth, possessing a medieval density that is relieved only by the sudden views of sky framed by its piazzas. Ponsi shows us a six-street intersection and ponders the abundance of acute angles, both indoors and out, in this city of infinite corners. In Florence, humans and buildings commingle. The author equates haircuts and changes of clothes with fresh coats of paint and re-shingling jobs, and contemplates the way a human hand, feeling its way down a city block, adds to the patina of a stucco wall. Ponsi sees the city itself as a living body, through whose veins its inhabitants course.

Summary:
In a supermarket in Berlin, wandering through aisle after aisle of processed meats, the artist Phyllis Ma conceived of Special Nothing, a collection of travel photos that take the form of still lifes. To Ma, ''special nothings'' are those everyday objects that, on the right day, or in the right moment, are sources of pure delight: a very hairy flower; a block of head cheese the size and shape of an iPhone; a gherkin that looks especially perverse. If you pay attention, you can find these special nothings in your home or on your block, but we tend to be more attuned to them when we’re in an unfamiliar place. In a new country, the most mundane sights and tasks are often fascinating, difficult, and strange: doing laundry, boarding a bus, buying groceries. But it’s in supermarkets, with their promise of familiarity — the same bright overhead lighting, neat aisles, and row of checkout counters can be found the world over — where things become most uncanny. In today’s global economy, you can visit a supermarket in any major city and find many of the same goods and brands that you would in your hometown. And yet everything isn’t the same. Refrigeration practices differ, labels confuse. You are seduced by a product’s packaging, want to buy it badly, but then realize you’re not even sure what type of food it is. This feeling of wonderment is at the heart of Ma’s fantastical aesthetic. Created in Berlin, London, Tokyo, Mexico City and New York, ''Special nothing'' is a unique travel diary, a distillation of those moments when the commonplace and the strange coalesce, turn into something magical, surreal.
