Summary:
This oversize study of Shanghai's creative culture presents an adventurous mix of architectural models, digital simulations, designer fashion apparel, drawings, runway videos, paintings, photo-works and video installations by the city's leading contemporary artists. Christopher Phillips, curator at the International Center of Photography in New York and editor of this volume, writes in his introduction, Since the early 1990s, Shanghai has been at the forefront of China's historic national resurgence. During that time, it has become one of the world's most frenetic and fascinating cities. With a population now approaching 20 million, it is an urban colossus--China's largest and most densely populated city.

Summary:
The temporary multipurpose hall built by Frei Otto and Carlfried Mutschler for the 1975 Federal Horticultural Show in Mannheim ranks as the world’s largest wooden grid shell construction. Although it was actually put under a preservation order in 1998, an international debate is now underway to discuss whether to demolish or maintain this structure. Working by and large without any digital computation technology, Frei Otto used a delicate suspended model to design the complex roof. Drawing on materials from the archives of Carlfried Mutschler and Frei Otto that are for the most part unpublished, the book presents the history of this experimental building for the first time.

In Grid Index, Carsten Nicolai created a visual lexicon of patterns and grid systems. Now Moiré Index is dedicated to his exploration of the moiré effect a phenomenon that can be created by the overlay of lines. Although such interference patterns are mostly considered to be unwanted side effects, they are actually extremely interesting from an aesthetic perspective. Based upon years of research, Nicolai has analyzed and systematically unlocked fundamental structures of crucial importance to the visualization of data. A CD accompanies the book and contains not only the featured moirés as digital files, but also individual elements that can be used to create an almost endless amount of new overlays.

Summary:
Despite the exaggerated news of the untimely 'death of the detail' by Greg Lynn, the architectural detail is now more lifelike and active than ever before. In this era of digital design and production technologies, new materials, parametrics, building information modeling (BIM), augmented realities and the nano-bio-information-computation consilience, the detail is now an increasingly vital force in architecture. Though such digitally designed and produced details are diminishing in size to the molecular and nano levels, they are increasingly becoming more complex, multi-functional, high performance and self-replicating. Far from being a non-essential and final finish, this new type of highly evolved high-tech detail is rapidly becoming the indispensable and critical core, the (sometimes iconic) DNA of an innovative new species of built environmental form that is spawning in scale and prominence, across product, interior, urban and landscape design. This issue of AD re-examines the history, theories and design of the world’s most significant spatial details, and explores their innovative potentials and possibilities for the future of architecture.

Summary:
The past two decades have seen revolutionary shifts in our ability to navigate, inhabit, and define the spatial realm. The data flows that condition much of our lives now regularly include Global Positioning System (GPS) readings and satellite images of a quality once reserved for a few militaries and intelligence agencies, and powerful geographic information system (GIS) software is now commonplace. These new technologies have raised fundamental questions about the intersection between physical space and its representation, virtual space and its realization. In ''Close up at a distance,'' Laura Kurgan offers a theoretical account of these new digital technologies of location and a series of practical experiments in making maps and images with spatial data. Neither simply useful tools nor objects of wonder or anxiety, the technologies of GPS, GIS, and satellite imagery become, in this book, the subject and the medium of a critical exploration. ''Close up at a distance'' records situations of intense conflict and struggle, on the one hand, and fundamental transformations in our ways of seeing and of experiencing space, on the other. Kurgan maps and theorizes mass graves, incarceration patterns, disappearing forests, and currency flows in a series of cases that range from Kuwait (1991) to Kosovo (1999), New York (2001) to Indonesia (2010). Using digital spatial hardware and software designed for military and governmental use in reconnaissance, secrecy, monitoring, ballistics, the census, and national security, Kurgan engages and confronts the politics and complexities of these technologies and their uses. At the intersection of art, architecture, activism, and geography, she uncovers, in her essays and projects, the opacities inherent in the recording of information and data and reimagines the spaces they have opened up.

Summary:
Many prophesied that the printed book would be doomed by developments in digital media. Far from it! The book has not only survived, but as tactile qualities have gained significance in our increasingly digital world there is also more unhindered experimentation with bound paper pages now than ever before. The materiality of the medium can give sensual emphasis to complex visual and textual content or appreciate its value. Some content isn t even apparent until it takes the form of a real object the printed book. Fully Booked is devoted to current cover and book design. It presents material from printed publications that succeed in striking a crucial balance between the market s demands for availability, legibility and durability on the one hand and sophisticated visual and content design on the other. By featuring projects in this experimental field that combine enormous creativity with skilled craftsmanship, Fully Booked also reveals trends in today s graphic design. In addition, Fully Booked presents a choice selection of artist books. Created by hand and printed in limited editions, these publications push the boundaries of conventional book design. Its range of inspiring examples not only makes Fully Booked a must-have for graphic designers, book creators and publishers, but also for every book lover.

Summary:
Rather than seeking to define a new movement, this "Surface consciousness" demonstrates that for architecture surface is now far more than a 'crust' or 'decorative strategy', setting up meaningful relationships between contemporary methods of visioning, making and fabricating. Prompted by digital advancements, surface consciousness represents a whole new way of conceiving tectonic form. Whereas classical and even Modernist architecture polarised ornament and structure, contemporary techniques allow for an integration and blurring of the inside with the outside. In architectural terms this enables an unparalled freedom of expression and form. This is apparent in the diversity of the work featured here by those such as Herzog & de Meuron, Michael Trudgeon, Ashton Raggatt McDougall(ARM) and Lyons, in which a new delight emerges in patterning and texture as well as the sensuous and the ornamental.

Summary:
More than half of the world’s population is now living in cities, and this number is predicted to rise. This means that more people than ever before will share the same urban infrastructure, and city governments around the world are heavily investing in smart city technologies to prepare. At the same time, scholars argue for a movement toward smart citizens and more participatory approaches to city making. "Making Cities Smarter" focuses on an often-overlooked element of the smart-city discourse the interface between citizens and smart-city applications. This volume translates principles from the field of user experience design to explore city-specific challenges, such as integrating physical and digital experiences. Offering a practical perspective on the concept of the smart city, this volume is the first comprehensive publication to focus on the citizen as the end user of smart-city systems.
