Summary:
Endemic to the Galapagos Islands, Sicyos villosus was collected by Charles Darwin during his journey on the Beagle between 1831 and 1836, but it is now extinct. After reading that a group of contemporary scientists were hoping to de-extinct Sicyos villosus using biotechnologies, Justine Blau began to investigate what it means to bring a species back to life. She undertook a journey to understand the desire for de-extinction and just what it was that science was now trying to save. Through her encounters with researchers and scientists in herbaria and seed banks, as well as her travels to the Galapagos, she uncovered a matrix of contradictions that radically challenge the modern scientific conservation complex.

Summary:
Little known among the general public, Alexander Henderson's work laid the foundations of the Canadian romantic landscape and its themes: the magic of winter, the endless lure of the country’s lakes and waterways, the metaphysical awe inspired by the vastness of its land and its great river. But Henderson also offered a colonial vision of the young North American city and documented a number of Canada’s major railway projects. This publication accompanies the first exhibition devoted to Henderson’s entire oeuvre and focusses on photographs that highlight the tonalities, textures, and clarity characteristic of the prints of the period. Texts explore Henderson’s biography, the sources and forms of romanticism evident in his landscapes, and the genesis of his work as a process of adaptation to the New World in a context of British imperialism.

Summary:
Much has been said about the Arts & crafts spirit of Californians, their appreciation of the land, their desire to build "simple" yet interesting houses that connect with the outdoors (sleeping porches, gardens, verandas, terraces, and so on), and their love of wilderness areas. This new edition of the classic, "Building with nature: roots of the San Francisco Bay region tradition", focuses on the beginnings (1865 and on) of the Bay area shingle style and Arts & crafts collaboration in California, and the origins of the trend toward building simple rustic homes in harmony with nature. Freudenheim explores how and why a small, influential group of Californians (including Joseph Worcester, Bernard Maybeck, Charles Keeler, William Keith, Charles Lummis, A. Page Brown, and others)-all of whom had come from the East or from England-were especially devoted to Ruskin and the Arts & crafts style and how this combined with their dedication to California's natural beauty to create a unique architectural movement.
