Summary:
By structuring this volume around the concept of form, Stefano Corbo links together Eisenman’s architecture with his theory. The book argues that form is the sphere of mediation between our body, our inner world and the exterior world and, as such, it enables connections to be made between philosophy and architecture. Summary:
By structuring this volume around the concept of form, Stefano Corbo links together Eisenman’s architecture with his theory. The book argues that form is the sphere of mediation between our body, our inner world and the exterior world and, as such, it enables connections to be made between philosophy and architecture. From the start of his career on, Eisenman has been deeply interested in the problem of form in architecture and has constantly challenged the classical concept of it. For him, form is not simply a cognitive tool that determines a physical structure, which discriminates all that is active from what is passive, what is inside from what is outside. He has always tried to connect his own work with the cultural manifestations of the time. These different moments underline different phases, different projects, different programmatic manifestos; and above all, an evolving notion of form. Taking a multi-disciplinary approach based on the intersections between architecture and philosophy, this book investigates all these definitions and, in doing so, provides new insights into and a deeper understanding of the complexity of Eisenman’s work.

Much has been written about Renaissance architect Leon Battista Alberti’s mantra of part-to-whole as one of the continuing conditions of architecture. While this underlying thesis has often been repeated in the annals of architectural history and theory, architects have rarely questioned the idea. Summary:
Much has been written about Renaissance architect Leon Battista Alberti’s mantra of part-to-whole as one of the continuing conditions of architecture. While this underlying thesis has often been repeated in the annals of architectural history and theory, architects have rarely questioned the idea. In ''Rewriting Alberti'', architect Peter Eisenman suggests, however, that Alberti provoked a radical discourse beyond the part-to-whole dialogue featured in his Ten Books of Architecture. Eisenman’s in-depth analysis of Alberti’s five built works reveals a disjunction between the architect’s buildings and theoretical writings, suggesting a new relationship of form to meaning based on the fragmentation of homogeneous space. ''Rewriting Alberti'' includes contributions by Pier Vittorio Aureli, Mario Carpo, and Daniel Sherer. Carpo, an architectural historian and critic, theorizes that Alberti’s work initiated an idea of the discipline as a notational system akin to contemporary computational logics. By way of comparison, Sherer, an architectural historian, reconsiders critic Manfredo Tafuri’s readings of Alberti, and architect and theorist Aureli draws on Alberti to propose another idea of the architectural “project.”

The changes which Information Technology has brought to all areas of our lives have been dramatic. Even in architecture it´s influence has been far-reaching, creating new processes opening up exciting new prospects. In this book, Peter Eisenman, Derrick de Kerckhove, and Antonino Saggio write boldly on the challenges which now face young architects. The IT Revolution offers opportunities which were previously undreamt of, but at the same time, danger lurks in the realm of virtuality with its implication of unlimited possibilities. Furio Barzon uses examples from contemporary architecture to underscore the three text contributions and also places them in the context of state of the art technology and future developments.

Summary:
This volume is one of three books in The Michigan Debates on Urbanism, a series that also features Everyday Urbanism and New Urbanism. Each book represents a distinct, inevitable, but still-emerging paradigm in contemporary urbanism, and is an elaboration of public debates held at the University of Michigan’s Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning during the winter of 2004. Peter Eisenman, acclaimed New York architect, author and theorist, presents several of his recent projects, including his team’s entry for the controversial Ground Zero competition at the World Trade Center site in lower Manhattan. This project and the larger body of his work are termed Post Urbanist by the series editor Douglas Kelbaugh. Post Urbanism refers to a critical, post-structuralist project, expressing avant-garde sensibilities and the techno-flow of a globalizing society. Barbara Littenberg and partner Steven Peterson, also well-known design practitioners from New York, present their entry into the Ground Zero competition, as well as other urban design projects that are characterized as ReUrbanism. Each side takes strong exception to the other’s work, leading to a heated discussion moderated by Roy Strickland, Director of the Master of Urban Design program at Taubman College.
