Summary:
Throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, wall charts were a familiar classroom component, displaying scientific images at a large scale, in full color. But it's only now that they've been superseded as a teaching tool that we have begun to realize something their ubiquity hid: they are stunning examples of botanical art at its finest. This illustrated book gives the humble wall chart its due, reproducing more than two hundred of them in dazzling full color. Each wall chart is accompanied by captions that offer accessible information about the species featured, the scientists and botanical illustrators who created it, and any particularly interesting or innovative features the chart displays. And gardeners will be pleased to discover useful information about plant anatomy and morphology and species differences. We see lilies and tulips, gourds, aquatic plants, legumes, poisonous plants, and carnivorous plants, all presented in exquisite, larger-than-life detail.

Summary:
Published in 1974 by Norman Fisher in New York, "Two pipes fourteen locations" is the very first book created by Peter Downsbrough using photographs. In sixty-three images, from various perspectives, the artist documents fourteen of his Two Pipes. Each sculpture consists of two standard steel pipes planted vertically. One has an above-ground height of five meters fifty (19'). Cut, the other has variable length. The distance between them is invariably eight centimeters (3''). Whether outdoors, in an exhibition space, or on a piece of paper, the Two Poles and Two Lines will accompany the Two Pipes in this tensioning of space. The book, "Two pipes fourteen locations", opens with a plate of captions. It provides information on the dimensions and location of the pieces. The very first photograph reproduced in the book is a close-up shot. The image is cropped. It foreshadows the photographic work that the artist Peter Downsbrough would develop over several decades.

Summary:
"In From Yard to Garden, Christopher Grampp has produced a work of major importance and significant originality. This book will change the way Americans see and understand their homes, yards, and gardens. Grampp provides the first full-length and thoroughly documented history of the American back yard. He takes courageous, new positions that are sure to prompt thinking for all his readers and to suggest further research by his academic readers. The illustrations and captions are absolutely excellent. "Grampp's writing style is direct, clear, personal, and always approachable. He provides enough detail-and so much original new information-that the specialist, academic reader will be intrigued and satisfied; yet the narrative moves forward quickly enough to engage even the general reader who may be entirely new to the subject. Grampp's writing also sparkles with real humor."-Paul Groth, University of California at Berkeley, and author of Living Downtown: The History of Residential Hotels in the United States (Paul Groth 20070901)
