Summary:
The newest volume in the Conversations series features Japanese architect Tadao Ando. One of the most celebrated living architects, Ando is best known for crafting serenely austere structures that fuse Japanese building traditions with Western modernism. His minimalist masterworks, geometric forms clad in silky-smooth exposed concrete, are suffused with natural light and set in perfect harmony with the landscape. In these highlights from lectures delivered at the University of Tokyos Graduate School of Architecture, Ando candidly describes his experiences as a largely self-taught practitioner, tracing his development from an early interest in the traditional building craft of his native Japan through his political awakening in the turbulent 1960s to his current stature as one of the worlds foremost architects. In addition to exploring his aesthetic influences and working process, Ando offers students a road map not only for maintaining professional integrity, but also for becoming effective agents of change in the world

This issue focuses on diverse combinations of architecture and support structures. The structures presented include a pre-stressed concrete construction, a twisted wood frame truss, a point-supported bowl composed of pre-fabricated steel elements and a lattice bowl with an enormous span width. Helen & Hard's library in Norway illustrates how a support structure made of glue-laminated timber can merge with built-in components and furniture. A pavilion at the University of Tokyo makes use of a strut system in the form of a tensegrity structure for its temporary architecture. A framework of a completely different kind was used by gmp Architekten for the national stadium in Warsaw: the roof consists of a modified bicycle-wheel-like structure that can be completely enclosed by a membrane. In an interview, Volkwin Marg of gmp Architekten talks about his experiences in conducting major representative projects in many different countries all over the world.

Summary:
''A forest in the city'' looks at the urban forest, starting with a bird’s-eye view of the tree canopy, then swooping down to street level, digging deep into the ground, then moving up through a tree’s trunk, back into the leaves and branches. Trees make our cities more beautiful and provide shade but they also fight climate change and pollution, benefit our health and connections to one another, provide food and shelter for wildlife, and much more. Yet city trees face an abundance of problems, such as the abundance of concrete, poor soil and challenging light conditions. So how can we create a healthy environment for city trees? Urban foresters are trying to create better growing conditions, plant diverse species, and maintain trees as they age. These strategies, and more, reveal that the urban forest is a complex system—''A forest in the city'' shows readers we are a part of it. Includes a list of activities to help the urban forest and a glossary.

Summary:
Gardens inside buildings represent a sustainable vehicle for a host of ecological and economic advantages. Factors such as improving the indoor climate and the workplace situation and hence increasing quality of life are the critical parameters of this very special design task. This book offers a comprehensive introduction to the planning and implementation of this special kind of garden, taking the concrete planning process as its guide. From design fundamentals and concept development with different typology variants all the way to the choice of materials, the various construction principles, and building services, all subjects relevant to planning are comprehensively presented. The planning information is illustrated with numerous international examples, with projects ranging from a "green wall" as interior design element and private house gardens in Australia, New Zealand, and Germany all the way to award-winning ecological offi ce buildings in the USA and the Netherlands, an old-age home in Sweden, and an indoor park in Canada. Summary:
Does going green change the face of design or only its content? The Shape of Green argues that beauty is inherent to sustainability, for how things look and feel is as important as how they’re made. In addition to examining what makes something attractive or emotionally pleasing, Hosey connects these questions with practical design challenges. Can the shape of a car make it more aerodynamic and more attractive at the same time? Could buildings be constructed of porous materials that simultaneously clean the air and soothe the skin? Can cities become verdant, productive landscapes instead of wastelands of concrete? Drawing from a wealth of scientific research, Hosey demonstrates that form and image can enhance conservation, comfort, and community at every scale of design, from products to buildings to cities. Fully embracing the principles of ecology could revolutionize every aspect of design, in substance and in style. Aesthetic attraction isn’t a superficial concern — it’s an environmental imperative. Beauty could save the planet.

Summary:
Bringing together real-world examples, "Architecture and energy" offers starting points for how to approach construction today and into the future. The energy requirements of buildings are enormous, resulting in a significant proportion of global carbon dioxide emissions, both in the construction phase and during the building’s use and eventual demolition. In an era of energy transition and extreme weather phenomena, the question of how we build in a time of climate change becomes all the more urgent. A sustainably-built wood and concrete supermarket that includes a roof farm, a kindergarten constructed from locally sourced recycled materials, renovating an office building so that it can remove its air conditioning and ventilation systems: in addition to the choice of materials and innovative operating concepts, the possibilities for reducing emissions and energy requirements lie above all in thinking about the entire life cycle of a building, including refurbishing rather than new construction when possible. This volume presents international best-practice projects characterized by sustainable design and provides forward-looking answers.

Summary:
In Bangladesh, climate change causes frequent flooding, forcing countless people to find new homes. In response, Bangladeshi architect Marina Tabassum (born 1968) and her team have developed the Khudi Bari (small house): a low-cost structure that can be assembled, disassembled, transported and reassembled in another location by the inhabitants themselves. This publication contains texts, photographs and illustrations of a Khudi Bari erected on the Vitra Campus in Weil am Rhein, Germany, as an example of a concrete response to problems exacerbated by the climate crisis. Says Tabassum: "Inspiration for this mobile house is rooted in the vernacular style of dwelling that can be found in Bangladesh. These structures are created in the manner of a flatpack system and are generally built along the majestic Padma, Jamuna and Meghna rivers. The houses have a wooden frame structure and corrugated metal facades and roofs, which can be dismantled and relocated in the aftermath of riverbank erosion and reassembled by their owners once they have found a new place to build."

Summary:
Prefabrication cannot be ignored, for it challenges the most traditional values of architecture. Architects may have neglected this area of practical construction, but they have much to learn from pattern-book houses, modular structures, Portakabins and mobile homes. The Prefabricated Home examines how the relationship between architecture and industrialized building has now become an urgent issue for architects.Colin Davies traces the history of prefabricated buildings from small-scale ‘prefabs’ to the precast concrete mass housing of the 1960s to the present-day revival of interest in ‘volumetric’ modular buildings, and assesses their architectural implications. He looks at what is happening today in factories and on building sites worldwide, and contrasts the aesthetic concerns of architects with the economic ones of industrialized building manufacturers. He argues that the involvement of architects in industrialized building can produce an exciting new type of architecture that is humane, liberating and environmentally friendly. The Prefabricated Home is a revealing and instructive book that will appeal to anyone interested in architecture and concerned with the future of housing.
