Description:
This project series documents the design of a hotel and commercial complex in Stratford, Ontario from 1972-1973. The office identified the project number as 7220. The project consisted of a three storey hotel and commercial space with four levels of parking, 150 hotel rooms and a pool and sundeck. The project, proposed at the corners of Downie and Wellington Streets, was commissioned by Warrick Consultants Limited of Toronto. A project list created by the office, which accompanied the donation of this fonds, referred to this project as Hotel for CN (David S. Owen). David S. Owen worked for Warrick Consultants Limited. The project is recorded original drawings of floor plans, an elevation, a section, presentation drawings, and a project painting dating from around 1972-1973.

Material in this file was produced between probably the 1950s and 1992. The subs-series contains photographs, including views of Liverpool and of Le Corbusier's buildings taken by James Stirling. It also contains several portraits of James Stirling, Michael Wilford and colleagues, interior views of the office, and views of drawings, models and of completed buildings by the firm, by photographers Geoff Beeckman, Martin Charles, John Donat Photography, Marlies Hentrup, Klaus Lehnartz, and Ray Williams.

While the records were held in the office’s archives this project was assigned the number 62/80. The office assigned the date 1989 for this project. An architectural competition for the Bibliothèque Nationale de France was held in 1988. Siza proposed a design but was not selected by the jury to build the library. Dominique Perrault was the architect seletected and the library was open in 1996. Documenting this project are presentation drawings, competition documentation, and slides of models.

While the records were held in the office’s archives this project was assigned the number 11/00. The office assigned the dates 2000-2008 to this project. The project site is located between the Alameda 5 de Outubro and the Lima river. The library was part of the waterfront development plan, directed by Fernando Távora. The development plan included a multiuse pavilion designed by Eduardo Souto de Moura, two office buildings, and an auditorium designed by Tàvora. The architects, with the help of José Bernardo Tavora and Adalberto Dias chose together location. The orthogonal two-story library respects the recommendations of the Portuguese Institute of Book and Libraries (IPLB). This project was realized and won the National Contemporary Architecture Award. Documenting this project are sketches, studies, plans, working drawings, technical drawings, and details. Textual material includes correspondence and project documentation. Photographic material documents construction work and models.
