Summary:
This is the first introduction to the key concepts and ideas of Bruno Latour that are relevant to architects. Drawing on many lively examples from the world of architectural practice, the book makes a compelling argument about the agency of architectural design and the role architects can play in re-ordering the world we live in. Following Latour’s philosophy offers a new way to handle all the objects of human and nonhuman collective life, to re-examine the role of matter in design practice, and to redefine the forms of social, political and ethical associations that bind us together in cities.

BRUTHER is the Paris-based architectural studio launched by Stéphanie Bru and Alexandre Theriot in 2007. Describing architecture as a ''combat sport'', the duo rose to international prominence in 2014. Competitions, experiments, and investigations, are all part of a work process they see as a strategic game, a balancing act between abstraction and function, diversity and uniformity, opacity and transparency. This edition presents the full extent of their work through 29 projects, ranging from collective housing and cultural and educational institutions to pavilions and exhibitions. While many are small in scale or unbuilt, they nevertheless allow an in-depth look at the practice.

Summary:
Curatorial projects are increasingly understood as research projects with extended time frames and complex interactions across diverse sectors. This book presents “100 Years of Now,” a research project taking place at Haus der Kulturen der Welt in Berlin from 2015 to 2019, as a critical investigation into the temporality of contemporaneity—both in terms of its structure and content. To address the expanding temporality of the now, the book argues for the need to include other forms of knowledge in curatorial process, and for contemporary cultural institutions to facilitate the development of collective curatorial processes and research practices.

In its architectural practice, Elemental responds to an awareness of the intervention context, the socio-cultural and economic dimension, and the recognition of the necessities and eventual deficiencies present. Examining the elementary way this Chilean collective approaches subjects is the focus of this issue. Developing works of very different scales, from individual dwellings to intervention studies at the urban scale, or even provincial planning, founder and Pritzker Prize winner Alejandro Aravena and his team clearly have their origins in South American architecture, yet also show an increasingly socially-engaged and global dimension: simplicity, perpetuality, efficiency, and utility.
