Summary:
How does a house shape experience? How does architecture establish a practice of living? Architect Sebastiano Brandolini invites readers on a meditative tour of his family’s house on the Sardinian coast, describing everything from the geology of the rocks beneath, to the history of the surrounding villages, to the way the shifting light measures the day. More than the story of a single summer home written by an accomplished architect, this is a study of how place, the built environment, and daily practice make up our lives, at the most minute level of detail. Recalling the essays of Walter Benjamin, Bill Bryson, Rebecca Solnit, and Lawrence Weschler, Brandolini’s writing weaves literature, art history, and the transformation of Sardinia since the 1960s into a single fabric. "The House at Capo d’Orso" is not only a study of architecture and life in the built environment, but of family life, and the way the Brandolini family adapted themselves to the house they built.

Summary:
In "To Begin at the Beginning", celebrated Spanish novelist and translator Javier Marías explores his impulse to write, the origins of his own family, and the connection between these two different sorts of beginnings. Exploring the difference between what is true in the world and what is true in fiction, he explains why an appeal to “real” events has never convinced him; why the history of his own family—with its Cuban and Spanish strands—has left him uncertain about what is legend and what is historic fact; and why what has been imagined or dreamed can end up being truer than what “really happened.” Complemented by an essay by Margaret Jull Costa on the practice of translating Marías, the cahier is also accompanied by images taken from the works of the influential Cuban artist Wifredo Lam. The result is a beautifully produced chapbook by one of Europe’s preeminent novelists, ready to be discovered and celebrated by English readers.

Summary:
Housing Density Housing construction for the greatest number is an indicator of the social character of a society. Most people want to live in a single-family house. Is it possible to realize the qualities of single-family housing in high-density construction? Almost 400 students of the Vienna University of Technology worked on this topic in the course of a design studio and – supervised by fourteen renowned Austrian architects – developed housing construction projects of various densities and environments. Selected works indicate the direction, but also the limits (of growth). With contributions by Silvia Boday, Marlies Breuss, Eva Ceška, Maria Flöckner, Susanne Fritzer, Katharina Fröch, Kinayeh Geiswinkler-Aziz, Gerda Maria Gerner, Feria Gharakhanzadeh, Adele Gindlstrasser, Ulrike Hausdorf, Franziska Orso, Ursula Schneider and Martina Schöberl. Two interviews with Harry Glück and Roland Rainer, conducted by Gerhard Steixner and Maria Welzig, introduce this topic to the reader by documenting contrasting concepts of horizontal and vertical densification in housing construction.

Summary:
Born in Amsterdam in 1957, Ari Marcopoulos came to New York in 1979 and quickly became part of a downtown art scene that included Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring and Robert Mapplethorpe. Since then, Marcopoulos has become recognized as a leading documentarian of contemporary culture, having chronicled the emerging hip hop scene, shot snowboarders in action and revealed the vicissitudes of his family life. Marcopoulos always appears to have forged a strong connection with the people he photographs, whether celebrated figures—from Andy Warhol to Kiki Smith, John Cage to LL Cool J—or more obscure personalities, so that he captures, without sentimentality or voyeurism, the intimate sensation of their daily lives. His images are particular to a time and place, but reach out to us via familiar themes such as family and the longing for adventure. The first retrospective on Marcopoulos, Within Arm's Reach collects work from three decades, and is supplemented with an essay by Stephanie Cannizzo.

Summary:
This book is an intimate story of an Inuit family negotiating the changes brought into their community by the coming of the qallunaat, the white people. Composed in 48 episodes, it recounts the daily life of Sanaaq, a strong and outspoken young widow, her daughter Qumaq, and their small semi-nomadic community in northern Quebec. Here they live their lives hunting seal, repairing their kayak, and gathering mussels under blue sea ice before the tide comes in. These are ordinary extraordinary lives: marriages are made and unmade, children are born and named, violence appears in the form of a fearful husband or a hungry polar bear. Here the spirit world is alive and relations with non-humans are never taken lightly. And under it all, the growing intrusion of the qallunaat and the battle for souls between the Catholic and Anglican missionaries threatens to forever change the way of life of Sanaaq and her young family.

Summary:
This exhibition catalog explores the remarkable theatrical designs of Italy’s influential Bibiena family in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. For nearly a century, members of three generations of the Bibiena family were the most highly sought theater designers in Europe. Their elaborate stage designs were used for operas, festivals, and courtly performances across Europe, from their native Italy to cities as far afield as Vienna, Prague, Stockholm, St. Petersburg, and Lisbon. Beyond these performances, the distinctive Bibiena style survives through their remarkable drawings. "Architecture, theater, and fantasy" commemorates a group of Bibiena drawings from the collection of Jules Fisher, the Tony Award–winning lighting designer, gifted to the Morgan Library and Museum in New York. Accompanying the first US exhibition of these works in more than thirty years, these drawings demonstrate the range of the Bibienas’ output, from energetic sketches to detailed watercolors. Representations of imagined palace interiors and lavish illusionistic architecture illuminate the visual splendor of the Baroque period.
