Summary:
Feldman is now widely recognized, alongside John Cage and Edgard Varèse, as one of the foremost American composers of the twentieth century. Despite his reputation, he remains poorly represented in published literature. Feldman loved to talk. This lifelong passion is demonstrated in the many interviews and lectures Morton Feldman gave about his life and work. Over the past seven years, editor Chris Villars has collected and published many of Feldman’s interviews online, a selection of which is now available for the first time in this book. The book is certainly an important addition to the literature of Feldman. Morton Feldman says can also be enjoyed for the pleasure that Feldman’s words offer, and for the illumination that they give to anyone who is making work in art or design. Morton Feldman says features 21 interviews and notes on conversations spanning 23 years of Feldman’s life, including conversations with Gavin Bryars, Kevin Volans, and Walter Zimmermann, as well as transcriptions of four Feldman’s lectures, held in Toronto (1982), Johannesburg (1983), and Darmstadt (1984). The publication also contains an introduction by the editor and the first English translation of Sebastian Claren’s biographical notes (originally published in Neither: Die Musik Morton Feldmans). A key element in the book is the photographs from Feldman’s life, which provide a rich accompaniment to the text.

Summary:
Glenn Murcutt is an internationally acclaimed Australian architect who for five years taught a series of master studios for graduate architecture students at the University of Washington. This book combines examples of the students' studio work with edited transcripts of Murcutt's public lectures and sessions with students, professionals, and Finnish architect Juhani Pallasmaa to produce a multifaceted portrait of Glenn Murcutt as a teacher. Essays set the studios in the context of an inquiry into the local practice of a global architecture. The studio work shows an application, in the Northwest environment, of Murcutt's fundamental principles. These projects often present architecture that has a precise engagement with local conditions and the natural environment. The collected studio work shows a full progression from site sketches through detail development, in drawings and models.

Summary:
Roberto Burle Marx (1909–1994) remains one of the most important landscape architects in the history of the field. His distinctive and widely acclaimed work has been featured and referenced in numerous sources, yet few of Burle Marx’s own words have been published. This collection of a dozen of Burle Marx’s lectures, most of which have never before been available in English, fills that void. Delivered on international speaking tours, they address topics such as Concepts in Landscape Composition, Gardens and Ecology and The Problem of Garden Lighting. Their publication sheds light on Burle Marx’s distinctive ethic and aesthetic of landscape, as “the real art in living.” The lectures paint a picture of Burle Marx not just as a gardener, artist and botanist, but as a landscape architect whose ambition was to bring radical change to cities and society.

Summary:
The work of Japanese architect Toyo Ito explores the dynamic relationship between buildings and their environments. His principal focus is on developing an architecture free of the grid system, which he believes homogenizes people and their lives. Toyo Ito: Forces of Nature documents the architects 2009 Kassler lecture at the Princeton University School of Architecture. Told primarily in Ito's own voice, the book features the edited lecture transcript, as well as an interview with the architect by Julian Worrall and a new translation of Ito's 1980 essay The Projection of the Profane World onto the Sacred. Projects illustrated in the book include: Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive (unbuilt), Taichung Opera House, Tama Art University Library, and Kakamigahara Crematorium. Bringing together different strands of a long and fruitful career, Toyo Ito: Forces of Nature concludes with an afterword by Ito that addresses the exhibition Home for All, a response to Japans earthquake and tsunami disasters in March 2011.
