Summary:
In "Unfamiliar journeys", photographer Alan McKernan takes us on an unconventional excursion through his home town, the ever-changing city of Liverpool. McKernan has spent the past ten years documenting the city’s evolution, and these photographs reflect both the grandeur and decay of this modern urban landscape. As well as Liverpool’s architectural landmarks, "Unfamiliar journeys" captures deserted warehouses, boarded-up butchers’ shops, the cathedral glimpsed between shabby terraces. Signs of Liverpool’s recent economic boom – billboards, towering high-rises, skeletal construction cranes – also feature. It takes a moment to realize that there are no people in McKernan’s vision of the city. The unusual viewpoints and stark pattern of cast shadows caught on black and white silver-based film enhances this feeling of eerie enchantment.

Summary:
The concept of unheimlich, translated into english with the term uncanny, contains in its semantic complexity the same sense of impotence and disorientation that we feel when, visiting a place for the first time, we find ourselves in front of elements that seem familiar to us. This feeling triggers in us contrasting reactions like calm and fear. Recalling dreamlike situations in which reality and fiction are intertwined, the project is inspired by the aesthetic concept, that Sigmund Freud explored in the 1919 essay 'Das unheimliche'. When the labyrinthine space of the children’s Colony in the former Eni village at Corte di Cadore is investigated through the lens of this concept, we question the restless familiarity of this place: 'Have I been here before?'.

Produced between 2004 and 2010, the series "Comme un murmure" (Like a whisper) reveals the profound connection that the artist has established over the years with this woodland. Little by little, image after image, Rajotte has taken root in these several hectares of woods, to the point of merging with them. Observing the growth of vegetation or traces of animal activity, he photographs the perpetual transformation of 'his' forest.Comme un murmure testifies to the powerful feeling that unites man and animal, when one rejoins the other as he immerses himself deeply into nature.

Summary:
Since the 1960s, Dorothy Iannone (born 1933) has aimed at representing ecstatic love, ''the union of gender, feeling and pleasure.'' Today her oeuvre, encompassing paintings, drawings, collages, videos, sculptures, objects and artist's books, is widely recognized as one of the most provocative and fruitful bodies of work in recent decades for its liberalization of female sexuality, and political and feminist issues. Created in 1969, when she was living with Swiss artist Dieter Roth, the ''Cookbook'' is a perfect example of how Iannone mixes daily life, creativity and thought, culminating in her vision of cooking as an outlet for both eroticism and introspection. A real book of recipes full of visual delights, the ''Cookbook'' contains densely decorated pages with patterned designs, packed text and vibrant colors.

In his photographs, Olivo Barbieri (born 1954) depicts inhabited environments in such a way that unexplored facets of reality come to light. Urban centers in China or America dominate his series, alongside locations such as the Dolomite Mountains, the Alps or Capri as well as waterfalls in Canada, Argentina and Zimbabwe. From 2003 to 2013 he photographed more than 40 cities and megacities worldwide. One of the distinctive features of his photographs is an extremely low depth of focus that creates the impression that they depict miniature models. This feeling of estrangement is further intensified by his lengthy exposures of artificial illumination. Barbieri produced his first nightlight photographs in the early 80s in Italy. Ersatz Lights presents all of the artist's night landscapes for the first time.

Summary:
What “really constitutes an architectural atmosphere,” Peter Zumthor says, is “this singular density and mood, this feeling of presence, well-being, harmony, beauty ... under whose spell I experience what I otherwise would not experience in precisely this way.” In nine short, illustrated chapters framed as a process of self-observation, Peter Zumthor describes what he has on his mind as he sets about creating the atmosphere of his houses. Images of spaces and buildings that affect him are every bit as important as particular pieces of music or books that inspire him. From the composition and “presence” of the materials to the handling of proportions and the effect of light, this poetics of architecture enables the reader to recapitulate what really matters in the process of house design.

In 2021, Etel Adnan and Simone Fattal recorded an intimate conversation about the Mediterranean at their Parisian home: "There are many Mediterraneans: the geographical, the historical, the philosophical... the personal, the one we swim, and we have swum in. It‘s an experience to swim, it is something you can‘t explain to somebody who never swam. This feeling of being held up by this water." The third cycle of TBA21–Academy’s curatorial fellowship program "The Current", spanning from 2021–2023 focused on the Mediterraneans in a program entitled "Thus waves come in pairs" after a line from Adnan’s poem "Sea and Fog." It pointed to the necessity of thinking of, and thinking with, the Mediterraneans as plural—plural as their interconnected cultures, and bodies of sweet and salty water, and possibilities of narrating their current transformations.

Summary:
This book applauds the union of architecture and engineering both today and throughout the history of building and construction. The relationship between the two fields is multifaceted. Some architects may have had an engineering background, and some engineers have experience of architecture. Some unacknowledged engineers have stood modestly behind great architects, and a number of architects have been encouraged and supported by their engineer-collaborators in designing structures that appear to defy gravity. "Architects + engineers = structures" focuses on the ideal: on a cohesive building design team where the members contribute equally, resulting in unique and exceptional designs. These are architects and engineers who entice beauty into buildings not just with lines on paper and calculations but with intuition, innovation and feeling for the needs of people, materials, strength, proportion, lightness and elegance.

Summary:
''Come Closer: The Biennale Reader,'' published on the occasion of the inaugural Prague biennale, considers the present via counter-hegemonic readings of the past. The book explores various perspectives of class, race, and gender differences in post-socialist states, past and present. In societies today that can seem fragmented, alienated, and sealed-off, a feeling of "us" and "them" can potentially emerge. The reliance on a common language to bring people closer often does the opposite, leading to feelings of contempt, anxiety, and fear. By drawing attention to themes of intimacy, care, and empathy, the contributions in this book search for new types of communication that can bring people together. Like language, art can be used to mediate these differences, and to examine issues relating to how people coexist in society.
