Summary:
An updated classic on designing both functional and visually stunning bridges. This highly visual guide to understanding and using aesthetics in the design of bridges is now available in a second edition. You'll find updated bridge examples, improved photographs, and more technical depth for serious engineering study. New case studies of bridges currently underway provide real-world coverage, with an emphasis on the relationship between design problems, planning, and solutions, along with structural and cost challenges. Featuring a larger page size to better highlight the detailed illustrations and photos, this edition's entirely new coverage includes discussion on the "whys" behind various recommendations, new material on moveable bridges, ways to respond to the structural and cost challenges involved in construction, integration of Context-Sensitive Design/Context-Sensitive Solutions (CSD/CSS) into the design process, twelve new case studies of bridges, with an emphasis on the relationship between design problems and planning their solutions, and information on the contribution of bridge aesthetics to environmental impact studies.

Summary:
"The Life and Death of Images is a well-conceived intervention in one of the principal impasses in contemporary theories of the image: the question, broadly put, of what comes after the opposition of the aesthetic and the anti-aesthetic. For almost three decades now, that question has been surfacing in various forms-as institutional critique, as relational aesthetics, as a return to beauty-but almost no interesting work has been done on the underlying issues. Costello and Willsdon conceive the problem in terms of aesthetics and ethics, and they enlist a number of the foremost writers in and around images in a series of exchanges. The format is innovative, and generates the kind of real interdisciplinary friction that is so often missing from ordinary edited volumes. The book's insights and hopes are an accurate reflection of the state of conceptualization of the image." -James Elkins, School of the Art Institute of Chicago

Saturation provides avenues to situate race as it relates to perception, science, aesthetics, the corporeal, and the sonic. In color theory, saturation is understood in terms of the degree to which a color differs from whiteness. In(...)

Summary:
The book uses saturation as an organizing concept, in part to suggest that current paradigms cannot encompass the complex realities of race. Saturation provides avenues to situate race as it relates to perception, science, aesthetics, the corporeal, and the sonic. In color theory, saturation is understood in terms of the degree to which a color differs from whiteness. In science, saturation points describe not only the moment in which race exceeds legibility, but also how diversity operates for institutions. Contributors consider how racialization, globalization, and the production and consumption of art converge in the art market, engaging such topics as racial capitalism, the aesthetics of colonialism, and disability cultures. They examine methods for theorizing race and representation, including “aboutness,” which interprets artworks by racialized subjects as being “about” race; modes of unruly, decolonized, and queer visual practices that resist disciplinary boundaries; and a model by which to think with and alongside blackness and indigeneity.
