Summary:
cube. It's one of nature's purest, most basic forms. We see cubes every day, usually made of elemental materials like sugar and ice. But what if the cube is something altogether more complicated? What happens when cubes are constructed of plywood and bamboo, foam and hay, chopped up telephone books and strands of chicken wire? Cube is a speculative investigation of this primal shape, a tactile exploration of the imagination in which unexpected materials create surprisingly beautiful and intriguing objects. Imagine you're asked to create something interesting out of this simplest of forms using whatever materials you can find at hand. That's the design exercise architect David Morrow Guthrie gives his students each year at Rice University, and the results, over 50 of which are presented in this handy little block of a book, will inspire any designer who is looking for ideas and inspiration, whether from elemental forms or innovative ways of using materials.

Summary:
How architects and engineers relate to one another has long been debated but never before addressed over a broad span of history. There are many controversial issues: about professional demarcation, about credit for design, about the value we attach to art in buildings, and about how that connects with advances in technique and efficiency. This pioneering and handsomely illustrated book enquires for the first time into the pattern of these relationships since the Renaissance. Concentrating particularly on Britain, France and the United States, Architect and Engineer looks at what has actually taken place when architecture and engineering have interlocked. It examines projects ranging from the building of Waterloo Bridge to the evolution of the Chicago skyscraper, and personalities from Vauban to Brunel and Wright. The results of this impartial investigation may often surprise and provoke the reader. It is a study that has radical implications for the compartmentalized ways in which the history of architecture and construction has conventionally been addressed

Summary:
John Gutmann (1905–1998) was one of America’s most distinctive photographers. Born in Germany where he trained as an artist and art teacher, he fled the Nazis in 1933 and settled in San Francisco, reinventing himself as a photo-reporter. Gutmann captured images of American culture, celebrating signs of a vibrant democracy, however imperfect. His own status as an outsider—a Jew in Germany, a naturalized citizen in the United States—informed his focus on individuals from the Asian-American, African-American, and gay communities, as well as his photography in India, Burma, and China during World War II. This book acknowledges Gutmann’s place in the history of photography. Drawing on his archive of photographs and papers at the Center for Creative Photography, it presents both unfamiliar works and little-known contexts for his imagery, linking his photography to his passionate interest in painting and filmmaking, his collections of non-Western art and artifacts, and his pedagogy.

Summary:
In the academic year 2000-2001, Yale professor and New York City based architect Peggy Deamer led two innovative courses: first, a focused seminar on the state of contemporary residential design; second, a creative studio offering house designs that drew on the discoveries of the seminar. This book, the second in a series documenting work at the Yale School of Architecture, combines work from both courses in a thoughtful and provocative study of the state of the house at the turn of the millennium. Deamer introduces the volume with an essay on three issues vital to a discussion of millennial design: newness, uniqueness, and design innovation. Designs of visiting seminar critics -- Steven Holl, Elizabeth Diller and Ricardo Scofidio, William McDonough, LOT/EK, Winy Maas, and Jacques Herzog -- are showcased along with descriptive and analytical texts. Work from the studio course is divided into various themes explored by the students: image, standardization and modularity, networks and diagrams. The hybrid quality of this volume -- designs by practicing architects and students; observation and interpretation -- reflects debates and issues at the heart of early-twenty-first-century architecture.

Summary:
'David Benjamin Sherry: American Monuments' is a landscape photography project that captures the spirit and intrinsic value of America’s threatened system of national monuments. In April 2017 an executive order called for the review of the 27 national monuments created since January 1996. In December 2017 the final report called on the president to shrink four national monuments and change the management of six others, recommending that areas in Maine, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah and the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans be offered for sale, specifically for oil drilling and coal and uranium mining. This publication focuses on the areas under review, with special emphasis on those that have already been decimated. Sherry documents these pristine, sacred and wildly diverse areas using the traditional, historic 8x10" large format. The resulting 31 photographs—all tipped in to the book by hand—not only convey the beauty of these important and ecologically diverse sites, but also shed light upon the plight of the perennially exploited landscape of the American West.

Summary:
Since at least Tudor times there have been architectural salvages : panelling, chimney pieces, doorways, or any fixtures and fittings might be removed from an old interior to be replaced by more fashionable ones. Not surprisingly a trade developed and architects, builders, masons, and sculptors sought out these salvages. By 1820 there was a growing profession of brokers and dealers in London, and a century later antique shops were commonplace throughout England. This fascinating book documents the break-up, sale, and re-use of salvages in Britain and America, where the fashion for so-called "Period Rooms" became a mainstay of the transatlantic trade. Much appreciated by museum visitors, period rooms have become something of a scholarly embarrassment, as research reveals that many were assembled from a variety of sources. One American embraced the trade as no other - the larger-than-life William Randolph Hearst - who purchased tens of thousands of architectural salvages between 1900 and 1935.

Summary:
The first major book of its kind, "Design in Canada" is a richly illustrated, fascinating portrait documenting more than fifty years of contemporary product design in this country. From the radical Project G stereo that every well-appointed "bachelor pad" had to have, to the wedge-shaped Contempra phone that quickly convinced homeowners to replace their boring black telephones, Canadian design has entered our homes and shaped our lives. For the first time, we can look at these products through the eyes of the cutting edge designers who created them, and celebrate their achievements.
