Summary:
In this book, Richard Hill examines the many-faceted relationship between aesthetic theory and architecture. Grounding his arguments in the practical issues related to building - the demands of site, materials, labor force, the nature of the commission - Hill expands our understanding and enjoyment of architecture. The book opens with an analysis of the relationship between buildings, drawings, and designs. Hill suggests that architectural drawings are essentially pictures of physical objects, although initially they may be imagined ones, and he considers the implications of this for architects and builders. He discusses the notion of "architectural experience" that has been important in the development of modern architecture, and the notion of "seeing as" that has been developed for other visual arts and that illuminates a range of architectural meaning. Asking how architecture can be expressive of a range of human states and qualities, Hill tests the idea that our ability to see the expressive aspects of buildings relates to our ability to see meaning in the faces and demeanor of other people. In the final section of the book, the author focuses on modern architecture's central aim to deepen the connection between usefulness and design, explores recent intense criticism of this outlook, and assesses the strengths and weaknesses of this body of criticism.

Summary:
During the 1920s and 1930s, proponents of Soviet architecture looked to various principles within the human sciences in their efforts to formulate a methodological and theoretical basis for their modernist project. ''Architecture of life'' delves into the foundations of this transdisciplinary and transnational endeavor, analyzing many facets of their radical approach and situating it within the context of other modernist movements that were developing concurrently across the globe. Examining the theories advanced by El Lissitzky, Moisei Ginzburg, and Nikolay Ladovsky, as well as those of their lesser-known colleagues, this illuminating study demonstrates how Soviet architects of the interwar period sought to mitigate Fordist production methods with other, ostensibly more human-oriented approaches that drew on the biological and psychological sciences. Envisioning the built environment as innately connected to social evolution, their methods incorporated aspects of psychoanalysis, personality theory, and studies in spatial perception, all of which were integrated into an ideology that grounded functional design firmly within the attributes of the individual. A comprehensive overview of the ideals that permeated its expanded project, ''Architecture of life'' explicates the underlying impulses that motivated Soviet modernism, highlighting the deep interconnections among the ways in which it viewed all aspects of life, both natural and manufactured.

Summary:
What is the future of the book? And, specifically, what is the future of books on art, design and architecture, and cultural-critical publications? We asked a large number of international interested individuals to respond to this question. Journalists, artists, architects, curators, translators, designers, philosophers, sociologists, teachers, book scholars, publishers, printing houses, distributors, booksellers, historians and art-historians, critics, policymakers, editors, students, and many others have enthusiastically shared their views with us, looking ahead five, twenty or seventy-two years (to the year 2100). At times utopian, wildly fantasizing, at other times with realistic scenarios, in both text and images, exciting for anyone who loves books and/or is involved in books and cultural content. Each section of this publication will be designed by various young designers, to celebrate its scope and diversity.

Summary:
Urban fortifications were the most colossal artistic achievements of the Italian Renaissance. Celebrated sculptors, painters, and architects such as Michelangelo, Bramante, Leonardo, Francesco Paciotto, and Antonio da Sangallo the Younger collaborated with humanists and military commanders to design citadels and ramparts. Unprecedented in their geometric sophistication, constructional ambition, and physical grandeur, these monuments profoundly transformed the shape and experience of the built environment. "Form and fortification" challenges the long-held assumption that military architecture was merely an instrument of warfare, restoring the practice to its central place at the nexus of sixteenth-century creative and cultural endeavors. Through a rich array of drawings, archival manuscripts, early printed sources, treatises, and realized works, this book traces the remarkable exchanges between fortification and other arenas of art, design, and engineering.

Europan is a biennial competition for architects and architecture students under the age of 40 that looks for innovative housing designs for real, specific sites across Europe. Guidelines encourage participants to address social and economic changes occurring around their sites, and, for this eighth Europan, that’s 74 properties across the continent. This year’s theme of "European urbanity and strategic projects" drew, for the six sites in the Netherlands alone, nearly 160 designs. Europan 8 offers a complete overview of the winning plans for the Dutch sites, including models, plans, sketches and interviews with the designers. The project section is complemented by descriptions of the six sites, an essay about the central theme, and a critique of the entries from a European perspective. An additional CD-ROM contains all other entries along with the prizewinning designs.

Summary:
"Skyscraper Rivals" is the first book to examine the architecture of Wall Street between the wars through an array contemporary and archival images and an informed discussion of the financial, geographical, and historical forces that shaped this district. The book focuses on the AIG Building--once known as the Cities Service Building--and three other major towers in the financial district, in their race to be the tallest, the most modern, and the most lavish. We meet the tycoons who paid for these structures, the architects who designed them, the workers who laboured in them, and the artists and photographers who portrayed them. The economics of skyscraper construction and the real-estate market of Wall Street are explained; also included are illuminating details and anecdotes surrounding each building's history.

Summary:
This interdisciplinary account of the different types of flexible living presents work by Modernist and contemporary architects and designers such as; Charles and Ray Eames, Buckminster Fuller, Jean Prouve, Joe Colombo and Shigeru Ban, contrasting them with the flexible houses and installations featured in non-European cultures. In view of the on-going globalisation of life, the traditional distinction between sedentary and nomad lifestyles has been undermined. Due to the growing significance of transport the sedentary populations are as mobile as the nomads, just as the latter now set up permanent camp - in fact, the two ways of life have mutually influenced each other over the course of time. This title also sheds light on the causes and effects of mobile living from a sociological and psychological viewpoint.

Summary:
For many architects he is a landmark - Jean Prouvé, creator of the metal curtain wall, pioneer in its application and early initiator of industrialised building techniques. His unfailing ability to combine functional engineering achievements with artistic sensitivity commands recognition. The period covered in this latest volume is significant in many respects. The post-war years placed enormous demands on housing and school construction. In his Maxéville factory Prouvé developed pre-fabricated housing, facade panelling, light filtering and other systems on a large scale. He was inspired by the works of the automobile and aeronautics industry, developing new applications for aluminium, which he presented in the 1954 Aluminium Centenary Pavilion. Moreover, Prouvé's furnitures of this period have become valuable collectors' items, some of which are now being reissued under licence.
