In this first critical history of the National Gallery of Canada, Douglas Ord explores how, in the gallery's development, art has consistently been linked to notions of religious truth, national spirit, and hallowed atmosphere, culminating in Moshe Safdie's design for the institution's current building. Summary:
In this first critical history of the National Gallery of Canada, Douglas Ord explores how, in the gallery's development, art has consistently been linked to notions of religious truth, national spirit, and hallowed atmosphere, culminating in Moshe Safdie's design for the institution's current building. Integrating accounts of political intrigue and public controversy with philosophy, art theory, and architectural analysis, Ord provides vivid accounts of successive directors' struggles to obtain a permanent home for the nation's art. Ord looks at the gallery's historical and intellectual context - from 1910 when Eric Brown became the gallery's founding director, through Jean Sutherland Boggs, to Shirley Thomson - shedding light on its acquisitions, government policy towards the arts, and the public's deep-rooted suspicion of avant-garde art. In showing how Canadian art came to be housed in a building whose architectural and ideological sources include Gothic cathedrals, Islamic mosques, Egyptian temples, St Peter's Basilica, and the squared-stone facades of the Holy City of Jerusalem, The National Gallery of Canada insightfully explores the relationship of Canada's art and its National Gallery to the project of the Canadian nation state.

Summary:
A photo-collage of past and present street visuals in Asia, Aestheticizing Public Space explores the domestic, regional, and global nexus of East Asian cities through their graffiti, street art, and other visual forms in public space. Attempting to unfold the complex positions of these images in the urban spatial politics of their respective regions, Lu Pan explores how graffiti in East Asia reflects the relationship between aesthetics and politics. The book situates itself in a contested dynamic relationship among human bodies, visual modernity, social or moral norms, styles, and historical experiences and narratives. On a broader level, this book aims to shed light on how aesthetics and politics are mobilized in different contested spaces and media forms, in which the producer and the spectator change and exchange their identities.

Imagine a power plant that is also the perfect place to have a picnic. On the foreshore of St. Kilda, Australia rises just such a structure—one that merges renewable energy production with leisure, recreation, and education. This volume imagines a world where the infrastructures that power our cities are designed to be reflections of culture, where public parks provide clean electricity to the city grid, and where the art that brings depth and vibrancy to our lives also measurably responds to the challenges of climate change. ''Energy Overlays'' provides a glimpse into a post-carbon future where energy infrastructure is seamlessly woven into the fabric of our cities as works of public art.
