Summary:
This oversized board book traces a city across the span of a night -- filled with the people, traffic, parks, streets, stores, and buildings that make up the town. The breadth of the urban experience may all be found here: from the bicyclist lazily gliding through the park to the raucous swooshhhhh of traffic; from the clanging crash of construction work to the quiet of a sweeping streetscape as seen from a high-floor apartment building. Vibrant colors that zing with the heat rising from a steaming sidewalk are perfectly matched to a syncopated, sound-filled, chant-again-and-again text.

With Apple, Ken Miki playfully presents a complete basic course in visual communication -- all based on a simple and familiar object: the apple. First, all five senses are activated in a step-by-step analysis of the apple by touching, looking at, smelling, tasting and listening to the sound of eating it. The apple is then used to illustrate the topics of form, color, size, surface, texture, writing, line, body and text -- the fundamental elements a designer works with. Addressing each theme based on this everyday object enables a playful approach that also makes for highly effective learning.

Summary:
In his lifetime, "Xanti" (Alexander) Schawinsky (1904-79) was best known for his work in the theater department at the Bauhaus. Fleeing Germany before the beginning of the Second World War, he landed at Black Mountain College in North Carolina, where in the 1930s he developed his theory of the "Spectodrama." Involving multimedia productions examining elementary phenomena such as space, motion, light, sound or color from scientific, technical and performance-based perspectives, the Spectodrama represents an early form of the "happening." Beyond the avant-garde utopias of the Bauhaus and his proto-happening art, Schawinsky also worked as a painter and graphic designer.
