Summary:
There is a long tradition of using wood as a distinct and ecologically sound building material. Wooden architecture conveys for today’s world the breadth of knowledge held in Western and Eastern cultures about the creative use of this unique material. The typical technique of building with wood, joinery, requires that elements are connected only by the skillful interlocking of the constructive parts. In this book, the history of wooden architecture is described in detail using hundreds of examples from Japan, China and Europe. From a holistic understanding, a picture emerges that is informative for architects, and designers, reopens an almost lost world to builders, and will enthrall laypeople.

TURBA is the first journal for the study, theory, and praxis of curatorial strategies in the live arts. The live arts are broadly defined as those arts in which contingent, momentary acts and events, performed by human or other autonomous agents, are crucial to the aesthetic perception and the emergence of meaning in ephemeral time-based work. They include, but are not limited to, dance, music, sound art, theatre, performance art, verbal arts, circus arts, live media arts and inter-arts performance works. With this journal, we aim to create a platform for the exploration of ideas, concepts, constraints, expectations, and contingencies which guide and drive curatorial practices in these fields.

His built work—the majority of which is located in Portugal—is based on his sound theoretical background and rooted in philosophical and anthropological research. 'Paulo Providência—Architectonica Percepta'' celebrates Providência’s influence on contemporary Portuguese architecture by looking closely at seven of his key buildings. Summary:
Pierre-Jean Giloux seeks to create a language using sound and image that combines elements of pop culture and mass media with more 'intellectual' cultures which refer to the visual arts and architecture. This first monograph by the artist accompanies a series of videos inspired by the Metabolists, a utopist architecture movement which emerged in Japan in the late 1950s. It follows the films’ production as he explores the connections between four cities (Tokyo, Yokohama, Osaka, Kyoto) to create urban portraits combining digital with filmed or photographed images of social and urban reality. The book includes texts by Pierre Musso, Élie During, and Vincent Romagny.

Hyatt has spent the last four years collecting sounds and arranging them into uniquely site-responsive music. Working collaboratively under the name Field Works, musicians from around the world have contributed over 50 new compositions to this massive collection. In "Metaphonics: The Field Works Listener’s Guide", Hyatt contributes a complete track-by-track guide to the 7-album Field Works box set, addressing from many angles the interpretation of place through sound. Renowned naturalist Bernie Krause writes the book’s foreword, establishing a taxonomy of the soundscapes explored in the book’s essays: geophony (earth sounds), biophony (animal sounds), anthropophony (human sounds) and cosmophony (sounds from outer space).

Summary:
Through eight thematic case studies that illuminate what eco art means in practice, reception, and history, Cheetham places the form in a longer and broader art-historical context. He considers a wide range of media—from painting, sculpture, and photography to artists’ films, video, sound work, animation, and installation—and analyzes the work of internationally prominent artists such as Olafur Eliasson, Nancy Holt, Mark Dion, and Robert Smithson. In doing so, Cheetham reveals eco art to be a dynamic extension of a long tradition of landscape depiction in the West that boldly enters into today’s debates on climate science, government policy, and our collective and individual responsibility to the planet.

Summary:
The articulation of transitional space forms a key element in Japanese architecture and its relationship to landscape. Climate and cultural history have shaped myriad forms and expressions of these spaces, which connect as well as separate. We pass through or dwell within them; these transitional spaces differentiate between one space and another, inside and outside, public and private, our body and what surrounds it. This issue of Pamphlet documents a conversation about six residential houses in Kyoto, Osaka, and Tokyo. The houses and their surroundings were captured through sound recordings and Point Cloud laser scanning, the results of which were processed into short videos.

Summary:
Made up of architects, lawyers, journalists, scientists, and more, Forensic Architecture is far from a conventional architectural practice; instead investigating human rights and environmental violations where the truth appears to have been distorted or covered up. In 10 years of work, they have investigated illegal detention sites in Cameroon, used oceanography to track a migrant boat adrift in NATO-surveilled waters, modelled a prison in Syria using victims’ memories of sound, and examined the causes and consequences of forest fires in Borneo and Sumatra. At its forefront is Eyal Weizman, a British Israeli architect. He is interviewed by Freya Marshall in issue 48 of Mono Kultur.
