Summary:
In amusement parks and theme parks the role of architecture in generating an emotional experience has long outgrown its mere functional and structural aspects. This trend is now pervading shopping malls, airports, museums, and even banks. It is a trend that progressive architects will have to confront as it becomes an increasingly important feature for investors and users in our pleasure-seeking society. With a wealth of international examples ranging from the prototype Disneyland (where Walt Disney's concepts of animation were congenially transformed into reality) to historical amusement parks and modern day theme parks, "Animation" investigates this global trend in contemporary architecture for the first time. Visual images and analytical texts reveal how animation architecture functions, the effects it can achieve, and the uses it can be put to.

Summary:
» Pierre Deffontaines

Lisbon Architectural Triennale launched the Facsimile edition of the catalogue of the first exhibition of architecture made at MoMA. Held in 1932, this exhibition constitutes a fundamental framework in the history of architecture. From Barry Bergdoll, curator of architecture and design of MoMA between 2007 and 2013, and Delfim Sardo, university professor, curator and essayist. This publication was published in partnership with the Lisbon Architecture Triennale and with the MoMA. (...)'' the ideas of a number of progressive architects have converged to form a genuinely new style which is rapidly spreading throughout the world. Both in appearance and structure this style is peculiar to the twentieth century and is a fundamentally original as the Greek, or Byzantine or Gothic. In the following pages Mr. Hitchcock and Mr. Johnson have outlined its history and its extent. Because of its simultaneous development in several countries and because of its world-wide distribution it has been called the international style.''

Summary:
Conceptions of modernity in architecture are often expressed in the idea of the zeitgeist, or “spirit of the age,” an attitude toward architectural form that is embedded in a belief in progressive time. 'Lateness' explores how architecture can work against these linear currents in startling and compelling ways. In this incisive book, internationally renowned architect Peter Eisenman, with Elisa Iturbe, proposes a different perspective on form and time in architecture, one that circumvents the temporal constraints on style that require it to be “of the times”—lateness. He focuses on three twentieth-century architects who exhibited the qualities of lateness in their designs: Adolf Loos, Aldo Rossi, and John Hejduk. Drawing on the critical theory of Theodor Adorno and his study of Beethoven’s final works, Eisenman shows how the architecture of these canonical figures was temporally out of sync with conventions and expectations, and how lateness can serve as a form of release from the restraints of the moment.

Summary:
The 13th-century town of Tübingen, Germany, is best known for its university, which spawned both Hegel and Kepler. And now, something very progressive is going on in the southern sector of the city. A field where an army barracks once stood has been transformed into a new district which has won international praise and awards for the way it has forged a livable and lovely mixed-use environment out of thin (and clean) air. "Go South", in essays and in the color photographs of Gudrun Theresia de Maddalena, tells the story of what should become a model for urban and suburban development. The palette of buildings and spaces ranges from single-family homes to a townhouse for almost 30 families, from a business promotion center to a passive-solar mixed-use building, complete with apartments, office units, shops, a kindergarten, and a greenhouse lobby. The Tübingen South district received the European Municipal Construction Award in 2002 and the Deutsche Immobilien Fonds AG award for Europe's Best Districts in 2004.

Summary:
This publication shows how architecture and interior design can promote childhood development. Based on historical and current concepts of progressive education, the book sketches design principles for building daycare centers and schools that can also be transferred to other spaces, such as pediatric clinics. Rooms can invite discovery; they can promote communication and social interaction, strengthen self-confidence, and be places of retreat or landscapes for play. For years, the Berlin architectural firm baukind has been creatively balancing the strict legal requirements and architectural possibilities of architecture suitable for children—always with a view to children’s needs. The book presents realized projects, such as the Kita Weltenbummler in Berlin, and aims to foster the equal involvement of children in the design of our environment.

Summary:
During the post-war years the North of England saw the building of some of the most aspirational, enlightened and successful modernist architecture in the world. For the first time, a single photographic book captures those buildings, in all their power and progressive ambition. Over the last few years acclaimed photographer Simon Phipps has travelled and sought out the publicly commissioned architecture of the post-war North. From Newcastle’s Byker Wall Estate, voted the best neighbourhood in the UK, to the extraordinary Park Hill Estate in Sheffield, from Preston’s sweeping bus station and Liverpool’s Royal Insurance Building, these structures have seen off threats to their survival and are rightly celebrated for the imprint they leave upon the skyline and the cultural life of their cities. This inspiring invitation to explore northern modernism includes maps and detailed information about all the architecture photographed.
