Summary:
An increasing number of people want to live in city centres, where space is limited. This causes architecture to grow vertically, creating new worlds on top of old roofs. Examples of this, seen on the Rhine riverbank in Cologne, Copenhagen and Graz, show how charming these new living spaces can look. Eight roofs from around the world are examined in detail, each covered with different materials: Adam Kahn uses wood shingles for his 'swimming visitors' centre; Diller Scofidio designs a park on top of a restaurant's green roof; Hopkins Architects gives the steel supporting frame of the Olympic cycling stadium a dynamic swing; Zaha Hadid wallows in Glasgow, with curves made of zinc sheeting and Jürgen Mayer H. is under huge umbrellas in the Spanish sun. In the chapter »technology« the complex supporting structure of the polyurethane-laminated, veneer-layered timber construction will be explained in detail.

Every gesture and action, even the simplest, is a project. The key words in design – method and precision – can be seen in everything: an inventory is the most effective way of collecting, ordering and deciphering everything we encounter. Inventario describes the “project” from widely different points of view, shifting freely between different disciplines bound together by the concept of creation: “project” is an object, a work of art, a building or even a part of nature, the preparing of a special dish, organizing of a trip, the taking of a photograph or writing of a short story.

Summary:
This issue commemorates the 200th anniversary of the Manhattan Grid by looking at it from a number of perspectives. The first part presents visualizations of census and zoning data made available by the city, as well as photographs and axonometric drawings to illustrate the changes and realities of Manhattan over the past two centuries. The preface collects commentaries on the grid from 11 architects whose practices are based in the city. Traversing from past, present to future, their perspectives shed light on the relationship of the grid to the city, its architecture, and its society today. The latter part of this issue catalogues 100 notable buildings in Manhattan.
