Summary:
The new average family is merely a basic outline of the different possibilities that have appeared in recent years. Given the wide variety of living situations today, the dwelling aims to satisfy needs regarding use, lease, cohabitation, and temporality. By way of this inquiry into the collective now, we become increasingly distanced from the average dwelling and propose new ways of living together – an option which embraces complexity. Here the magazine draws a timeline in the collective housing of the 21st century in which three generations of project types coexist, reflecting varying degrees of complexity: a diversity of types, the best of two worlds, and reducing individual space.

According to editor Will Holder, ‘Flurry’ came about after being asked to propose ten books for acquisition by the Gerrit Rietveld Academie library in Amsterdam. He gave a talk about that selection, for which he preferred reproducing original material over commentary, and wanted to allow others to speak. The outcome was a reading back and forth between the ten books. It(...)

It soon became clear that this reading would readily lend itself to an issue of ‘F.R. David’. Associated material came up in the process of transcription. Included are writings by Emmie McLuskey, Krist Gruijthuijsen, Bitsy Knox, Maurin Dietrich, Camille Pageard, Frances Stark, Eileen Myles, and more.

Summary:

Summary:
The extent to which economic value is placed on knowledge today forces us to reconsider its social role and our relation to it. Research, the general category for processes of knowledge production, has become omnipresent in both education and practice. Today it’s not so important what you know but rather how you think. Progress, in this sense, is predicated by critical reflection on ways of knowing and disciplinary traditions of thought. This issue of Volume – the second in our series on learning – is dedicated to mapping the contemporary field of research in architecture, art and the social sciences. We wanted to learn from those who have been instrumental in shifting the boundaries and shaping today’s landscape of creative knowledge production.
