En Italie, en France, en Angleterre et en Allemagne, le discours lettré sur l'architecture répercute jusqu'au XIXe siècle l'écho du texte fondateur. D'où cette affirmation, cette amplification et ce déclin du vitruvianisme en tant que doctrine cardinale, sujette aux remises en cause de l'histoire. Partant de ce texte fondateur, le livre proposé examine le retentissement de Vitruve sur la théorie de l'architecture au Moyen Age, à la Renaissance et dans les Temps Modernes. Emanant de cours et de séminaires donnés à l'Université de Bâle, et donc destiné à l'enseignement, il propose un aperçu de l'exégèse vitruvienne et vise à mettre en place des jalons qui renvoient à la lecture des textes.

We felt it was necessary to provide each speaker with the opportunity to reflect on how their research has been altered by the events of the past year. While past volumes asked many questions, this collection of interviews and talks puts forward strategies for addressing some of the perceived inequities in the public domain. Nigel Bertram and Kim Dovey’s texts explore forms of protest, preservation and civil disobedience within urban spaces. Protest continues to be intrinsic to public discourse and by consequence, how the city is preserved and developed. In contrast, these modes of resistance have their counterpart in discussions about policy-making and planning. For Lynda Roberts this is through revealing the political motivations behind the procurement of cultural artifacts and their deployment throughout the arts precinct. Crystal Legacy outlines ideas of agonism and consensus planning in large scale infrastructure projects. Marcus Westbury reflects on new forms of tenure in creating and running a public cultural institute and Elizabeth Taylor unpacks the political, social and commercial motivations behind car parking.

Peter Reyner Banham, taught in the newly founded architecture program at the State University of New York at Buffalo between 1976 and 1980. During his tenure at Buffalo, inspired by the daylight factories and the grain silos of the region, he conducted research that led to his seminal book, A concrete Atlantis, illuminating the relationship between American industrial buildings and European Modern Architecture. The Peter Reyner Banham Fellowship program at Buffalo was established in 2000 to celebrate Banham's legacy at Buffalo, and, most importantly, to project new work that is inspired by Banham's foundational body of scholarship on material and visual culture. Each year, the Banham Fellow engages the students and the faculty of the department through research, creative activity, and teaching, and presents that body of work through an exhibition and a lecture. In this publication, the projections of the past five Banham Fellows are documented: Jonathan Solomon (2005-2006), Sergio Lopez-Pineiro (2006-2007), Eva Franch-Gilabert (2007-2008), Michael Kubo (2008-2009), Brian Tabolt (2009-2010). This document is a testament to the reach of Banham's visions and to the visionary work of the Fellows at Buffalo.

The Peter Reyner Banham Fellowship program at Buffalo was established in 2000 to celebrate Banham's legacy at Buffalo, and, most importantly, to project new work that is inspired by Banham's foundational body of scholarship on material and visual culture.
