Summary:
The four long narratives in The Emigrants appear at first to be the straightforward biographies of four Germans in exile. Sebald reconstructs the lives of a painter, a doctor, an elementary-school teacher, and Great Uncle Ambrose. Following (literally) in their footsteps, the narrator retraces routes of exile which lead from Lithuania to London, from Munich to Manchester, from the South German provinces to Switzerland, France, New York, Constantinople, and Jerusalem. Along with memories, documents, and diaries of the Holocaust, he collects photographs—the enigmatic snapshots which stud The Emigrants and bring to mind family photo albums. Sebald combines precise documentary with fictional motifs, and as he puts the question to realism, the four stories merge into one unfathomable requiem.

Summary:
Businessman and art collector Hermann Lange entertained a close connection to Mies van der Rohe and interior designer Lilly, and their associations involved family, friends, and Lange’s company. From 1927 to 1930 this resulted in structures such as Lange’s own home, Haus Lange in Krefeld, as well as the “Crous” apartment for Lange’s eldest daughter and her husband in Berlin. The couple took the decor and furnishings for this apartment — down to the bell plate — to all of their later apartments, even into the 1990s. This volume is therefore the first to present many of van der Rohe’s and Reich’s furniture pieces, as well as the original decor from Haus Lange (now a museum), thus providing new insights into the collaboration of the two designers.

Montecito, California is home to some of America's most spectacular private residences. Most amazing perhaps is Val Verde, the house built in 1915 on a breathtaking seventeen-and-one-half-acre coastal plot by American architect Bertram Goodhue. Besides its status as the most preserved of the great early-twentieth-century Southern California estate properties, Val Verde also bears the distinction of being the earliest American free-standing single-family house in the Spanish Colonial Revival style. Austin Val Verde: A Montecito Masterpiece is the first book to reveal the full extent and richness of Val Verde's architecture, interiors, and gardens. The book includes never-before-published color photographs of the house and its gardens by the late Berge Aran

Publication made for the occasion of the show at 11 Mansfield Street, London. "Over the last few months, we have immersed ourselves in his archive; to discover new and rediscover familiar pieces; to discuss, and to gain a better understanding of his design and creative process. The focus of our conversations has been on quality; quality of work, life, time, research, food, family and friends. This focus informed our selection of pieces, and the grouping of themes, to reach the final edit of chairs, tables, 'Chables', cabinets, screens, shelves, mirrors, vases, beds, desks, lights, hooks, books and more. The idea was to fully embrace the journey so far, in order to navigate and prioritise what the future should and can become. " —Sarah Douglas

Summary:
''The Japanese House Since 1945'' is a cohesive chronology of iconic Japanese houses, presenting the most compelling architect-designed homes to show developments in form, material, architectural expression, and family living over almost eight decades. Unparalleled in their conceptual purity, many Japanese houses have become icons at home as well as abroad. Presented with clear prose and accompanied by photographs and drawings, the book features ninety-seven houses, divided among nine chapters and organized by decade. In addition to acquainting the reader with individual homes, the book illuminates the social, technological, geographic, and historical factors behind these epoch-making houses. Developments over the period are underscored by the visual presentation, as it evolves from monochrome to color and from hand-drawn to digital.
