Summary:
The first in-depth biographical study of the brilliant but elusive architect who fundamentally redefined twentieth-century architecture. Now ranked with Frank Lloyd Wright, Le Corbusier, and Mies van der Rohe, Louis I. Kahn brought a reverence for history back into modern architecture while translating it into a uniquely contemporary idiom. Drawing on more than one hundred interviews with colleagues, coworkers, clients, and family members and illustrated with many previously unpublished photographs, this book documents the uniquely American rise of a poor immigrant to the pinnacle of the international architectural world. It illuminates the richly diverse personal relationships Kahn had with such clients as Jonas Salk and Paul Mellon, and the romantic entanglements that mystified even those closest to him. While celebrating the genius of Kahn's art, the book provides an invaluable portrait of the man who created it.

Summary:
Orri Jónsson was holidaying one summer in the north of Iceland with his family, when he stumbled upon an abandoned farmhouse and began taking photos of it. Fascinated with the results but disappointed by the restrictions of the 35mm film he had used, he returned to the motif with a large-format analogue camera. Orri thus photographed the gloriously decaying interiors of deserted houses throughout Iceland for the next 12 years, and ''Interiors'' contains the best of these images from 1999 to 2010. Painterly in color, rigorous in composition and lacking people, Orri's photos evoke the personal histories of the inhabitants who long ago abandoned their homes. ''Interiors'' is shaped by an uncanny silence and sense of loss, most poignant in the images of objects people left behind--old buttons, newspapers and even a hot water bottle--tokens of vanished lives.

Summary:
Using CGI, Canadian artist Benjamin Freedman presents a captivating image sequence which meticulously reconstructs his childhood memories of a family road trip to Maine in 1999. Blurring the line between reality and simulation, these surreal images toy with the ephemerality of memory and its inseparability from fantasy. Freedman’s recreated scenes of roadside diners, pools, and picnics create a visceral and sensory dreamscape, evoking the sounds and smells attached to his childhood recollections. These digitally constructed images explore how technology permits us to revisit and reimagine the past in ways that feel both familiar and uncanny. Distinctions between personal recollection and collective nostalgia are compromised, creating an idiosyncratic visual realm saturated with shared emotions and histories. Freedman’s use of digital tools to recapture nostalgic scenes underscores the fluidity of memory while also challenging traditional conventions of the photographic medium.

Summary:
''Checkpoint 300'', the highly securitized border facility between occupied Bethlehem and Jerusalem, is a central feature of Israeli control of Palestinian land and life. An apparatus of turnstiles, overcrowded corridors, and invasive inspections, the checkpoint regulates the movement of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians, granting access to some while excluding most. Offering a nuanced exploration of space, Mark Griffiths reveals ''Checkpoint 300'' as a stark symbol of Israeli colonialism that embodies larger systems of control and violence. Drawing on nearly a decade of fieldwork, Griffiths examines how colonial power infiltrates family dynamics, enforces gendered mobility restrictions, shapes local economies, and extends into the global exchange of capital and security technologies. He also underscores how Palestinians endure and resist under oppressive conditions and how indigenous forms of life and living are sustained, illuminating how colonial space is contested and countered, unmade and remade.

Summary:
Exploring locales such as city streets, bus stops, parking lots, bars, retail establishments, and discussion groups, "Together Alone" ventures into what is often thought of as the realm of passing strangers to examine the nature of personal relationships conducted in public spaces. While most studies of social interaction have gone behind closed doors to focus on relationships in the family, school, and workplace, this innovative collection pushes the boundaries of the field by analyzing both fleeting and anchored relationships in the seldom-studied communal areas where much of contemporary life takes place. The contributors shed light on the diversity and character of day-to-day negotiations in public spaces and at the same time illuminate how these social ties paradoxically blend aspects of durability and brevity, of emotional closeness and distance, of being together and alone.

Summary:
Massive changes in household structures and a conscious demand for ecologically built housing have led to radical changes in the housing field. No longer can the classical family automatically be taken as the basis for urban housing concepts. Flexible designs based on ecological principles and an emphasis on outdoor space are now in demand. Thus architects are being called upon, just as it was in the 20s, to deliver new concepts. This volume presents the buildings with their underlying concepts of a number of architects who have done just that. It serves both as a source of inspiration and a reference work for all those involved in housing. The Department of Housing and the Economics of Housing at the Technical University, Munich intends to publish a new volume covering the latest housing projects every two years.

Summary:
The Chimneys is home to one of Frederick Law Olmsted Jr.’s finest surviving Italianate gardens. On a 1902 commission by Boston financier and philanthropist Gardiner Martin Lane and his wife, Emma, Olmsted designed the garden as a series of distinct rooms, forming sequential terraces in an architectural response to the downward sloping topography. By 1991, when Nola Anderson and her husband, Jim Mullen, purchased The Chimneys, the garden was in ruins, having not been maintained for nearly forty years. The garden’s renewal became Ms. Anderson’s three-decade, hands-on personal passion as she rebuilt, restored, and recreated the garden, honoring the original Olmsted intent while completing the design with historic and contemporary plantings that pleased her evolving personal taste. The renewed gardens are, once again, the centerpiece of The Chimneys estate and a vibrant extension of a family home.
