Summary:
This 768-page volume stands as the most comprehensive source on the Canadian collective General Idea, founded in Toronto in 1969 by Felix Partz, Jorge Zontal and AA Bronson and active until the deaths of Partz and Zontal in 1994. The book is arranged in three parts: Performances and Actions, In the Streets and In the Showroom. The first two parts focus on ephemeral, time-based and even disposable works. The third part includes a plate section offering a near-complete visual survey of General Idea's practice. Facing-page comparative images show works as they appeared in historical installations or other relevant contexts. These three sections correspond broadly to the collective’s development: from performances, actions, pageants and other practices (1969–78), through works engaging with mass-media formats such as the magazine, television and video (1972–’80s), and finally to works conceived for galleries and museums (1985–94). The publication features a prologue by AA Bronson, a conversation between him and Beatrix Ruf, and new texts by international scholars. The appendix includes a complete scholarly bibliography, exhibition and performance histories, and an illustrated chronology of the group.

Summary:
Michiel Schwarz and Joost Elffers declare the dawn of a new cultural era, as we transition from modernity to sustainity - towards a world that is more connected, more localist, more digital and more sustainable. As the authors of this manifesto argue, "sustainism marks a shift not only in thinking and doing but in collective perception - of how we live, do business, feed ourselves, design, travel and communicate, as much as how we deal with nature." In the twentieth century, whether we knew it or not, our world was shaped by modernist values, from the design of our cities to our homes, technologies and our conceptions of progress. Sustainism recasts our relationship to all of these things, binding ecological issues to a larger picture of our world. Through a series of graphically dynamic aphorisms, quotes and symbols designed for worldwide use by businesses, individuals and institutions, to signal support for sustainism, Michiel Schwarz and Joost Elffers show how the movement is already reshaping global culture, technology, food and media. With this concise manifesto, they launch the term sustainism into the public consciousness. The sustainist era has begun.

Summary:
The 1840s were a period of rapid growth and social conflict in Montreal. The city''s public life was marked by a series of labour conflicts and bloody sectarian riots; at the same time, the ways that elites wielded power and ordinary people engaged in the political process were changing, particularly in public space. In Taking to the Streets Dan Horner examines how the urban environment became a vital and contentious political site during the tumultuous period from the end of the 1837-38 rebellions to the burning of Parliament in 1849. Employing a close reading of newspaper and judicial archives, he looks at a broad range of collective crowd experiences, including riots, labour demonstrations, religious processions, and parades. By examining how crowd events were used both to assert claims of political authority and to challenge their legitimacy, Horner charts the development of a contentious democratic political culture in British North America. Taking to the Streets is an important contribution to the political and urban history of pre-Confederation Canada and a timely reminder of how Montrealers from all walks of life have always used the streets to build community and make their voices heard.

Summary:

Summary:
In 2014, Xu Tiantian, founder of Beijing-based studio Design and Architecture (DnA) began to work in Songyang County, in China's Zhejiang Province. Her exemplary holistic planning concept of Architectural Acupuncture, which has gained the support of local administrative and political leadership, aims at revitalising rural areas and comprises the renovation of production plants and of tourist and technical infrastructure as well as the creation of venues for culture and education and of social housing. Each of Xu's small-scale interventions at local level is unique, only the small budget is common to all of them. Moreover, they are all inter-related with each other and in their entirety serve the broader goal of mutual enhancement. This book introduces Xu's concept of Architectural Acupuncture and discusses the influence of architecture on cultural self-understanding and economic renewal in 21st-century rural China. It features some 20 new buildings and conversions of existing structures with diverse functions. Published alongside are essays by international economists, sociologists, and curators as well as by the secretary of the Songyang County Party Committee, examining the social, political, and economic implications of sustainable planning and collective action in the Chinese province.

Summary:
For the past seven years, the Stanford Literary Lab, founded by Franco Moretti and Matthew Jockers, has been a leading site of literary scholarship aided by computers and algorithmic methods. This landmark volume gathers the collective research of the group and its most remarkable experiments. From seemingly ineffable matters such as the "loudness" of thousands of novels, the geographic distribution of emotions, the nature of a sentence and a paragraph, and the evolution of bureaucratic doublespeak, descriptions emerge. The Stanford Literary Lab lets the computers provide new insights for questions from the deep tradition of two centuries of literary inquiry. Rather than, like the rest of us, letting the computers lead. The results are adventurous, witty, challenging, profound. The old questions can finally get new answers—as the prelude to new big questions. "Canon/Archive" is the fulfillment and further development of "distant reading," adding a rare, full-length monument to the piecemeal progress of the digital humanities. No student, teacher, or inquisitive reader of literature will want to be without this book—just as no one interested in the new data-attentive methods in history, criticism, and the social sciences can afford to evade its summons.

Summary:
