Summary:
''SHIFT: Architecture in Times of Radical Change'' is published in conjunction with the sixth Chicago Architecture Biennial (CAB 2025) under the artistic direction of Florencia Rodriguez. In a world defined by crisis and uncertainty, where architects are researching, relearning, and reimagining, the volume marks not only a change in direction but also presents provocative inquiries about a redefinition in the substance and fundamentals of the field. It is an invitation to think with others, to project with intention, and to set new grounds for the interpretation and design of our built environments. In the same spirit, the book unfolds the many faces of ''SHIFT'' through collective, multilayered, and multidimensional conversations, visual essays, and manifestos. CAB 2025 participants’ voices are brought to print through a transcript of a five-hour conversation marathon that tackled topics such as new realism, the magic in the ordinary, pleasures in the urban, and the need to critically shift architecture’s language, as well as a repository of manifestos exploring other possible worlds. Beyond the exhibition, ''SHIFT: Architecture in Times of Radical Change'' also calls upon practitioners from different fields to discuss the current state of education in architecture schools, the challenges of material culture, the future of housing, and exhibitions as devices for change.

Summary:
''Los Angeles Lost and Found'' is a collection of essays and photographs that explores Los Angeles as a city of constant reinvention, where history is often buried beneath layers of change. Experience designer Margaret Chandra Kerrison uses the lens of narrative placemaking to examine how LA’s physical spaces—its streets, neighborhoods, and landmarks—shape both individual and collective identity. What sets this collection apart is Kerrison’s deeply personal approach. She weaves her own story into the fabric of the city’s landscape, grounding cultural analysis in lived experience. Her reflections on the recent Los Angeles wildfires are especially poignant, revealing how natural disaster can strip a place down to its essence and reshape the stories we tell about it. Through these moments of vulnerability, she illustrates how loss and resilience are embedded in the urban environment. Blending memoir with observation, Kerrison highlights how overlooked spaces carry emotional weight and cultural memory. In doing so, she invites readers to view Los Angeles not just as a city of spectacle, but as a living, breathing narrative. Los Angeles Lost and Found is both intimate and expansive, offering a portrait of a city that continues to inspire and challenge those who call it home—or dream of doing so.

Summary:

Summary:
"Decolonize self-care" mounts a sharply critical investigation into contemporary "self-care" practices—particularly those that embrace using mindfulness and other techniques such as tantra and yoga, as well as gluten-free and low-carbohydrate diets. The authors argue that "self-care" has become an industry, and one that is often marketed to and by wealthy, cisgender, white women in the global north. Spurgas and Meleo-Erwin contend that the rhetoric of "feminism" is regularly co-opted in selling self-care, with wealthy white women being the primary consumer target and also those who profit from self-care entrepreneurship. Through careful research and sharp analysis, the authors offer a vision of more radical, communal, collective, anti-racist, and anti-capitalist forms of care for chronic pain, burnout, depression, anxiety, and other conditions, which are often the result of gendered, sexualized, racialized, ableist, and colonialist traumas under late capitalism. Utilizing critical feminist disability studies, madness studies, Black feminist scholarship, decolonial theory, and other intersectional and Marxist feminist critique, the authors re-theorize care outside of and beyond what current self-care rhetorics generally allow. A smart and often laugh-out-loud read, "Decolonize self-care" speaks to academic and lay audiences alike.
