This publication brings together a range of private homes built since the 1950s in Salento, in the area to the south of Lecce: single and double-family dwellings which, in terms of quality and variety, represent a unique example of spontaneity and aesthetic anarchy on the Italian architectural panorama. The study is carried out with the contribution of three photographers and two historians of architecture, and examines a highly peculiar phenomenon from an unusual perspective. In Southern Salento, in the area lying between Capo di Santa Maria di Leuca, Porto Cesareo on the Ionian Sea and San Foca on the Adriatic coast, house construction is founded on a solid craft tradition which, in open contrast with any institutional architectural school, has led to the rise of eccentric, free and fluid approaches to architecture. It was built in Nagoya, Japan, and shipped to New York in 1954, where it was exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art and then relocated to Philadelphia’s Fairmount Park. This extensively illustrated volume centers on Yoshimura’s design for Shofuso and two allied sites located in New Hope, Bucks County, Pennsylvania: Raymond Farm (1939–41); and Nakashima Studios. Each site, in its own way, is the embodiment of the personal relationships and cross-cultural collaborations among this group of architects and designers. Born to a Jewish family, raised, and educated in Vienna, Preis became an exile after escaping from Nazi-occupied Austria in 1939 and briefly being interned as an "enemy alien" when the United States entered World War II. Preis emerged as one of Hawai‘i’s leading modern architects in the 1950s and 1960s. Basel-born architect Max Alioth was a prominent figure on the Swiss architecture and culture scene. Alioth was a co-founder of Basels’ Architecture Museum in 1984, which in 2006 became the Swiss Architecture Museum (S AM). Together with his wife Susanna Biedermann, he founded the École Supérieure des Arts Visuels (ÉSAV) in Marrakech, Morocco, for which he also designed the main campus building. This first monograph on Max Alioth illuminates his achievements from various perspectives. Selected architectural designs from 1961–2007 are featured in detail through photographs, plans, and texts. ''Di sguincio'' – meaning aslant, asquint, or seen from the corner of an eye – brings together more than a hundred black-and-white photographs made by Guido Guidi with small-format cameras between 1969 and 1981. These images record experimental early dialogues between Guidi and his camera: made without looking through the viewfinder and lit with a bright flash, they capture people, bodies, gestures, minor events, and fragments of space in moments of sudden and even abrasive encounter. While formally stark and even verging on the abstract, they document people and places close at hand – his family home in Cesena; friends with whom he shared an apartment in Treviso; colleagues at the Institute of Architecture at the University of Venice – forming affectionate personal works which explore the performative tension at the heart of images. This book reproduces Guidi’s own prints from the period, with their high contrast, unusual blurring and definition, and oblique, occasionally indiscernible handwritten annotations.
